Understanding Group B Strep

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a common bacterium carried in the digestive system or va**na by 20-40% of healthy adults, including pregnant women. While it typically causes no harm to you, it can pose a small risk to your baby during birth, leading to a serious infection in rare cases.

We understand you want to do everything possible to ensure your baby's safety, and having clear, accurate information is the first step.

Should You Be Tested for Group B Strep?

The presence of GBS can be transient, meaning it can come and go. For this reason, and because transmitting it to a baby is uncommon (affecting about 1 in every 1,750 pregnancies), the NHS does not currently offer routine GBS screening to all expectant mothers. They typically only offer antibiotics during labour if certain risk factors are present.

However, many expectant parents seek the reassurance of knowing their GBS status before labour begins. Understanding whether you are carrying the bacteria can empower you and your healthcare provider to create the best birth plan for you and your baby.
