🚨Summer Hydration Alert 💦.

Summer is officially here and a time to pay particular attention to hydration, especially with outdoor sporting activities. Sports hydration is vital as it plays a part in regulating body temperature, maintains joint lubrication, and ensures optimal muscle function. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, cramps, dizziness, and reduced performance.

Athletes should drink water before, during, and after exercise—especially in hot or humid conditions.
💧Start hydrated: sip water 1–2 hours before activity.
💧During workouts, aim for 150–250 ml every 15–20 minutes.
💧For sessions over an hour, consider sports drinks to replenish electrolytes.
💧Avoid caffeine or alcohol, which can dehydrate.
💧 After exercise, rehydrate gradually and monitor your urine colour—it should be a pale yellow.

Beyond the Pain💥- How Fear and Anxiety Are Holding Athletes Back

A new study explored how exercise-induced pain, fear of pain, kinesiophobia (an irrational fear of movement), and injury anxiety relate in amateur vs. professional athletes, and between men and women, as well as individual vs. team sports.

Results showed female and amateur athletes experience higher injury anxiety and fear of pain, while team sport players report a greater fear of letting others down. Professional athletes had less anxiety about re-injury.

These findings highlight the psychological toll of sports injuries and the need for a biopsychosocial approach in athlete care- something Ultra Sports Clinic prides itself on with our holistic approach to rehabilitation.

Understanding these factors can help tailor support and prevent fear from becoming a barrier to recovery.

Cycling Knee Pain? Understanding PFPS & IT Band Syndrome 🚴‍♀️

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) and Iliotibial Band (IT Band) Syndrome can both affect cyclists but stem from different biomechanical issues.

📌 PFPS, or “cyclist’s knee,” causes pain around or behind the kneecap, often due to poor saddle position, weak quads, or imbalanced pedalling technique. It’s aggravated by repetitive knee flexion.

📌 IT Band Syndrome presents as sharp pain on the outer knee, caused by tightness or overuse of the iliotibial band rubbing against the femur. It may result from improper bike fit, especially saddle height or crank length.

Both conditions can be managed through bike adjustments and developing a personalised programme with one of our sports physiotherapists, comprising strengthening, stretching, and technique correction to ensure pain-free riding.
