Making new friends as an adult.
Ok, so I know this isn't food related but it's a topic I think a lot of people can relate to.
Whether you've moved city, lost mutual friends through a breakup or just evolved and lost compatibility, it's a problem most of us face at one point or another.
I'm not claiming to be an expert but I did want to share what had worked for me (and what I'll continue to do) incase it's helpful for others.
Whatever I'm about to suggest, the most important thing is to feel comfortable in your own company. Making new friends involves showing up to group events on your own, being stood up and often rejected. It's actually harder than dating because there's no limit to how many friends you can have but most people are dating to find 'the one'. That makes the rejection even harder because let's face it, they just don't want to spend time with you. 😅
However, you need to remember that not everyone has to like you just as you don't like everyone either. Sticks and stones.
- Look for Facebook groups in your local area. There are often lots of single girls groups or groups for different hobbies and interests. Often this leads to WhatsApp group messages, meet ups and cool events.
- Take matters into your own hands and arrange your own meet ups. If you've found a great community online but there's no in person communication, arrange your own. You'll be surprised how many people want to get involved (even if half of them drop out last minute).
- Use Eventbrite to find group activities you're interested in. Attending events like these mean you instantly have something in common.
- Fitness groups, if you're into exercise consider trying new classes, running groups or bootcamps. If your current gym has, let's say a certain demographic that aren't going to be your besties, get a day pass somewhere else.
- last but not least, get used to talking to strangers. I guess this comes quite naturally to northerners but sparking up conversation with baristas, receptionists and whoever else you come on contact with will help you in other situations. We all say stupid things from time to time, it's not the end of the world, believe me.
