An award-winning death-care service that turns the ashes of those who have died, into beautiful memorial reefs.

Resting Reef is a death care startup that redefines how we honour loved ones through an environmentally conscious memorial service. Founded by graduates from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, Aura Murillo and Louise Skajem, the sustainable venture transforms cremated ashes into living ocean reefs that regenerate marine ecosystems. By turning loss into life, Resting Reef aims to

tackle several issues at once: redefine traditions with an ocean “cemetery” that restores marine biodiversity, sequesters carbon and prevents coastal erosion—creating a lasting tribute that benefits our oceans and future generations. The team at Resting Reef has garnered significant recognition, including winning five Innovate UK grants, the Arts Foundation Fellowship Award, a D&AD Pencil for Creative Excellence and the Seoul Design Award. Resting Reef has been featured in Fast Company, Wallpaper, The Telegraph, and showcased at events like the London Design Biennale and Dutch Design Week.

🧑‍🧒 For some of us, this year will bring a different kind of Father’s Day, a day of remembrance.

Our co-founder Aura’s father not only shaped her life but, his passing, inspired the very heart of what Resting Reef is today. This Father’s Day, we’ll honour such legacies by sharing two stories of inspiring women whose work carries their fathers’ love forward.

Today that it’s World Oceans Day 🌊 we ask ourselves, What if the ocean holds memories?

The ocean is the greatest storyteller we have, it holds histories older than we can comprehend, cycling through the tides with every sunrise and carrying the spirit of past lives in its currents.

But in the last century, we have taken more than we have given: pollution, overfishing, and climate change have disrupted the balance, causing habitats to vanish and ecosystems to collapse. What happens when the ocean forgets?

This World Oceans Day, we reflect on the ocean not as a resource, but as vessels carrying the memories of our loved ones and as homes providing sanctuaries for our marine life.
