Fascinating article about why human eggs last roughly 50 years and why understanding their longevity may help embryologists better grade egg quality in assisted reproductive treatments. It has always struck me how limited egg grading is, and now I understand that this area is poorly researched due to legal & testing constraints coupled with a lack of cohesive research.
In human beings, egg cells need to survive for about five decades, much longer than most other cell types โ and they may achieve this unusually long lifespan by slowing down their natural cell processes
