I was recently diagnosed with a genetic blood condition called Haemochromatosis, a condition which is caused by a faulty gene which affects how my body absorbs iron. This causes a build-up of iron, known as iron overload which, if untreated, can cause lasting damage to your organs and in extreme cases - death.
How did I find out I had this? Chronic fatigue.
After some other concerning symptoms I decided to get a health check at my GP and they found my iron levels to be worryingly high (678ug/L where the normal range for men would be between 30 and 400ug/L.)
At the peak of my iron levels, it felt like everyday was a bad hangover. I felt weak, had brain frog, felt heavy, and exhausted. I struggled with everyday activities, could barely get through a day at work, and felt like with every step I could just lie down and sleep right there.
Haemochromatosis is not a curable condition but can be managed through venesections (a treatment which involves having blood taken to reduce the amount of iron in the blood stream). My journey with venesections and the never ending needles is a story for another time.
Since starting treatment, my iron levels are at a much safer level and I feel like I have a spring in my step! Everything in my body feels healthier, I feel cheerier, and lighter. It is so strange to describe but my blood feels cleaner!
With my new found energy, I hope to be sharing more of my journey with living with haemochromatosis.
If you want to read more about this condition I have linked the NHS website in my bio.
I encourage anyone feeling unsure about symptoms affecting their health to speak to your GP and advocate for your wellness.
