Acne is primarily caused by a combination of factors involving:

Excess oil production

Clogged hair follicles

Bacteria

Inflammation

Here’s a quick guide to why these four factors contribute to acne prone skin.

Excess oil production - Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum, which helps keep the skin lubricated. If excessive sebum is produced this can often lead to clogged pores which are a primary factor in acne development.

Clogged pores: When dead skin cells mix with excess sebum, they can form a plug in the hair follicles, creating an environment where bacteria thrive.

Bacteria: Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a type of bacteria that lives on the skin and can contribute to acne when it proliferates within clogged pores. This bacterium produces substances that can irritate the skin and cause inflammation.

Inflammation: When the hair follicles become clogged and bacteria multiply, the immune system responds by sending white blood cells to combat the infection. This process triggers inflammation, leading to the redness, swelling, and pain associated with acne lesions.

Other factors can also be contributary to acne development which include:

Hormonal changes (such as those during puberty, menstrual cycles, or hormonal imbalances)

Genetics (acne tends to run in families)

Certain medications

Lifestyle factors like diet and stress
