I am often asked if scoliosis can affect pregnancy or if people with scoliosis can still get pregnant. This is one of my cases that I took on 3 years ago, before the patient got pregnant, managed to carry the pregnancy well, even though she had quite severe lower back pain in the last trimester. It is very important to educate the patient, especially before but also after pregnancy, regarding the prevention and improvement of back pain in the case of scoliosis. Many patients are ignorant of this, believing that if there are no changes in the Cobb angle, nothing can be done. It is very important to do prevention, manual therapy, exercises, swimming, any type of movement that does not hurt to be done permanently to combat pain, to reduce stiffness and to increase joint mobility. As can be seen in the X-ray picture, there are degenerative changes, disc herniations, osteophytes, structural changes and implicitly disc herniations that have appeared in the lumbar area that cause quite severe pain. This is not just about treating or maintaining scoliosis, but about preventing and improving the intervertebral joints.

80 y/o | Highly complex spinal case

Severe degenerative scoliosis with multi-level changes and nerve root compression (L4–L5, L5–S1).
📸 EOS scan also highlights: bilateral hip replacements + bilateral shoulder replacements, alongside osteoporosis.
At this stage, the goal is clear:

Not correction — pain management & function.

Physiotherapy focuses on:
• reducing pain (especially sciatica)
• improving mobility within a safe range
• maintaining independence

Treatment may include:
• gentle manual therapy
• condition-specific exercises
• electrotherapy & laser therapy (for pain relief, especially in the lumbar area)
All interventions are carefully adapted and dosed, especially in the presence of osteoporosis and multiple joint replacements.
📌 The patient also has a lumbar spine MRI, which I currently only have the report for.
I will share the imaging in the coming days once I receive access to the scans.

Kyphosis is not just about posture,it can affect mobility, breathing, and overall spinal function.
In this video, I’m applying thoracic spine mobilization techniques, both manually and using the Manuthera table. These techniques aim to improve mobility, reduce stiffness, and support better spinal alignment.
The MRI image shown is real and belongs to the patient presented in this case.
Every case is different, treatment should always be personalized and consistent for real results.

Scoliosis exercise

In this exercise, we use axial elongation and directed breathing into the concave side to improve rib mobility, spinal control, and movement awareness.
⚠️ This is a demonstration only.
Exercises must be individually adapted based on the type, location, and severity of the curve.

Scoliosis
Before and after

After 3 years of consistent work, we are able to observe the outcome of this case.
The patient followed a structured treatment plan, including brace wear for approximately 23 hours per day (both daytime and nighttime braces). In addition, we worked together once per week through supervised sessions consisting of specific exercises, manual therapy, 3D spinal mobilization, and therapeutic massage. A personalised home exercise program was also followed, alongside regular swimming.
Following this long-term approach, a favourable result was achieved. The Cobb angle improved from 46°/30° to 20°/8°, as confirmed by X-ray imaging.
It is important to highlight that outcomes can vary significantly from one patient to another. Results depend on multiple factors, including individual body response, consistency, and adherence to the treatment plan.

Scoliosis Before and after

This case highlights the importance of consistency and a personalised approach in scoliosis management.
At the initial assessment, Teodora presented with a 46° thoracic curve and a 30° lumbar curve.
After three years of physiotherapy, a structured home exercise plan, and consistent brace wear, we can observe a significant improvement.
The thoracic curve reduced by 20°, and the lumbar curve improved to 8°, as confirmed by X-ray.
This is not the result of a single technique, but of a well-structured, long-term plan adapted to the patient.
Every case is different. Proper assessment and individualised treatment are essential.

Fiziokinetoterapie

BENEFICIILE FIZIOKINETOTERAPIEI

  • profilactic - totalitatea metodelor și mijloacelor fiziokinetologice utilizate pentru a preveni afecțiunea prin menținerea și întărirea stării de sănătate;

  • terapeutic - este întâlnită în kinetoterapia profilactică și cea de recuperare;
