Earlier this week, the United Nations adopted a new political declaration on NCDs.

It commits to scaling up hepatitis elimination as a strategy to prevent liver cancer, marking the first UN endorsement of hepatitis testing, treatment, and cancer prevention.

The new political declaration is a critical opportunity for hepatitis advocacy, and sustaining momentum from the High-Level Meeting will be essential to ensure countries translate political commitments into concrete action.

To support this, WHA has developed a new briefing to help hepatitis and cancer advocates engage governments on implementing the declaration’s pledges. The briefing includes key advocacy messages and clear calls to action.

⏰ Closing tonight!

Applications for the SAFEStart+ Country Community Advisory Boards (C-CAB) for Malawi, Nigeria, and Uganda close tonight!

WHA and ICW Eastern Africa are leading efforts to strengthen and connect community engagement across SAFEStart+. This includes establishing and supporting community advisory boards, facilitating demand generation, and advancing advocacy led by those directly impacted by the conditions SAFEStart+ seeks to address.

The newly formed C-CABs in Malawi, Nigeria, and Uganda will:
✔️ Provide insight from affected communities to shape SAFEStart+ implementation at the country level
✔️ Support meaningful engagement between communities, health systems, researchers, and implementing partners
✔️ Strengthen advocacy and accountability for equitable access to prevention, testing, treatment, and care
✔️ Contribute to communication, demand creation, and stigma-reduction strategies

New scientific breakthroughs are accelerating progress towards a hepatitis B functional cure, which could be transformative for people living with hepatitis B.

Given the new advancements in research, WHA has developed a community briefing for advocates that outlines key terms related to a hepatitis B functional cure and the types of compounds that are in development.

Sub-national meetings like these are vital to advancing the hepatitis elimination agenda, and we look forward to future summits taking place in other parts of the country.

The deadline to apply for the SAFEStart+ Country Community Advisory Board (C-CAB) has been extended.

New dates:

Malawi, Nigeria, and Uganda: 17 December 2025
Paraguay: 30 January 2026
