I think we’ve forgotten how to ‘winter’.
We live in a culture obsessed with progress and productivity, as if growth was our only purpose. But, as written in the Tao Te Ching“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished”.
Autumn teaches us to let go, leaves falling from trees, the late flowers sow their seeds, ready for next year. And just like a seed, winter invites us to turn inwards and nourish strong roots. However, for a lot of us, winter feels like the busiest season, with holidays, work, and social events ramping up in number and intensity. A feeling of pulled in multiple directions.
We have been conditioned to see rest and stillness as unproductive or not worthy of our time. However, these moments of rest are the foundations of everything that comes next. We are born of nature and we’re built to move with the rhythms of the world. And the innate wisdom of our bodies remember, even when our minds forget.
We are so attached to nature even our eyes have evolved to perceive more shades of green than any other colour, we are so shaped by our environment and the world around us!
Dopamine hits are what we crave. Not just aesthetic moments or items, but that heart stopping moment when the world overwhelms us and reminds us we are both small and infinite. When we forget autumn and winter, we forget part of us. We forget how to grieve, how to slow down, how to rest deeply enough to cycle back to spring renewed.
So, how do we manage our winter energy without disappearing from the world altogether? How do we show up for what nourishes us and our responsibilities while still slipping gently into our form of soft hibernation?
These are some of the small things I’ll be doing:
❄️Drinking hot teas
❄️ Eating warm seasonal foods (think root veg)
❄️ Cosy nights in with friends
❄️ Gentle movement practices like qigong or yin yoga
❄️ Strolls in the park, especially when the sun shows her face
❄️ Read that book that I’ve been meaning to start
❄️ Journal regularly
To live seasonally is to live fully. Sit in the truth that every season is a gift, we need to remember how to live by it.
