We are often asked about how Drawing and Talking works, who it works for and how it supports older adults and those living with dementia.

As a therapeutic intervention and process, it is suitable for both one-to-one and group work. Studies have also shown that certain creative play activities even help boost cognitive function in various areas of the brain and enhance communication, brain function and social interaction in people with dementia.

On our training courses, we share exactly how you can begin using the approach in your setting with those older adults who would benefit in either the one to one approach or group work setting.

With just one day of training you can begin one-to-one work (Foundation Course)
With just two days of training you can begin group work (Advanced Course)
You also receive one year's FREE access to our membership area, including coaching calls, that can support you.

The one to one technique improves the emotional wellbeing of your client over the 12 weekly sessions, each lasting 30 minutes

Having access to community and social networks is vital to our mental health and wellbeing. Age UK centres are welcoming supportive places, that are fun. Let’s hope that the next government funds these vital services.

Loneliness is a major social problem across all age groups. For older people it is often compounded by bereavement and other losses, and difficulties getting out and about because of disability, ill health, or poor public transport.

Our network of local Age UKs support hundreds of thousands of older people to keep at bay and enable them to play a role in their community. But we need the Government to help by taking the lead.

Shout out to all carers this week is Carers week ( 10th to 16th June) Is there someone you need to recognise for their contribution?

Carers Week is an annual awareness campaign to celebrate and recognise the vital contribution made by the UK's 5.7 million carers

The theme for Carers Week 2024 is 'Putting carers on the map'.

This year many charities that support carers such as Carers UK, want to highlight the increasing pressures carers are under and to campaign for much-needed recognition and support.

This includes raising awareness about the challenges carers face which impact on their finances, employment, health and wellbeing and ensuring policymakers and politicians take steps to better support carers’ needs.

A staggering 82% of carers surveyed by Carers UK said the impact of caring on their physical and mental health would be a challenge over the coming year, with nearly 60% adding that being valued as a carer would improve their wellbeing.

A question we are often asked is 'How does Drawing and Talking work?'

''Working 1:1 with a lady with moderate dementia, it took around 3 sessions to get into the flow of what a Drawing and Talking session is. This is ok, as it was her work so, she dictated the pace.

By the 6th session she was familiar with the structure of the sessions, engaging with the work and there was a noticeable difference in her demeanour both during and after sessions. She was calmer, happier, and more relaxed.''

Early intervention and support in mental well-being is vital for individuals of all ages.

Drawing and Talking allows individuals to discover and process emotions through a non-directed technique, setting it apart from existing solution-focused and cognitive-based therapies and interventions.

Drawing and Talking works with an adult's inner world, rather than their conscious, cognitive mind.

If you work with older adults we would love you to come and meet us on our next introductory webinar.

Join us on Tuesday June 18th at 7.30pm to learn more about how you can introduce Drawing and Talking into your setting.

Did you know?

Engaging in Drawing and Talking sessions isn't just about using drawing as a form of expression—it's a holistic journey towards better physical and mental health, especially for older adults!

Drawing combined with open discussions provides a safe space for individuals to explore and express their emotions, stimulate memories, and maintain and build secure, healthy attachments.

It's not about creating a piece of art work; it's about helping with anxiety, stress and frustration, sparking joy, and preserving precious moments.
