“Episode out now! How To Optimise Men’s Hormonal Health with Marek Doyle 🎧

Marek Doyle is a nutritional therapist whose own metabolic problems forced him to see the disconnect between the scientific literature, the medical model and real-life outcomes.

This is something which I often hear! Normally people explore nutritional therapy and functional medicine because they were unable to get satisfactory answers elsewhere. From his 17 years of experience and reconciling the data from over 3000 patient outcomes, Marek aims to identify the root cause of conditions and dysfunctions and provide answers that are provided by data, not dogma. From a string of outcomes considered ‘impossible’ turnarounds by some, he now finds himself specialising in complex cases.

This the second time I had the opportunity to catch-up with Marek and I am delighted we did because I always learn something new.

In this fascinating episode we discuss:

- The importance of testosterone
- The interplay between testosterone and neurotransmitters
- Common health issues that affect men
- What foods and nutrients are important for men’s health
- Navigating the best supplements for men and much more.

DR ROB VERKEK AND MELENI ALDRIDGE - RESET EATING: TURNING WHAT YOU EAT AND HOW YOU EAT INTO POWERFUL MEDICINE 🎙️🥙🥗

I had the pleasure to sit down and chat with Dr Rob Verkerk and Meleni Aldridge from the Alliance for National Health International - - an organisation with a mission to promote and protect our right to sustainable natural health around the world – by working with nature, not against it.

In this fascinating conversation we discuss all things food, cooking, the bad, the good and the potentially dangerous. Anti-nutrients in certain foods get a a lot of flack from various dietary advocates but many of these substances are easily reduced through food preparation methods. And small amounts do not have negative consequences for most people. Knowledge is power.

Topics:
* Best cooking methods to maximise nutrition
* How to minimise anti-nutrients in food
* Why focussing on a rainbow of colours is so important
* An ancestral approach to diet
* The potential dangers of gluten
* Much, much more.

Happy, Healthy Pregnancy with Dr Tom and Marzi O’Bryan 🎙️👨‍👩‍👦

Dr Tom O'Bryan is a world-renowned speaker and educator with expertise in food sensitivities, environmental toxins, and the development of autoimmune diseases. And is a nutritional therapist and Chief Operating Officer at thedr.com. Tom and Marzi recently brought into the world their child, Gio (Pictured 👶).

Pregnancy is something that I know many find to be a challenging time, where hormonal and physiological changes can take a toll on the body. Additionally, various states and conditions can also lead to phantom pregnancies and even the loss of a child. These are topics that I don’t believe are spoken about anywhere near enough given the emotional effects these can cause.

is a functional medicine wizard (TM) and I always enjoy speaking to him about the latest science, his unique perspectives and approaches.

With Tom and Marzi’s expertise and experience, I was delighted to talk about their functional health approach to a happy, healthy pregnancy. I was wonderfully schooled during this insightful conversation, where we touched on:
* Emotional changes during pregnancy
* Navigating challenges while pregnant
* Evidence-informed dietary patterns and nutrition for healthy pregnancy
* Managing cravings
* Resources and guides for pregnancy
* Supplementation for pregnant mothers
* Coping with loss
* And much, much more

If you have any concerns while pregnant or when trying to conceive, I would always recommend following the advice of a trained healthcare professional. HOWEVER, I would implore you to do your own research too as there is so much YOU can to do to support yourself and your family through any stage of life.

SICK AND TIRED: COULD MOULD BE THE CAUSE? 🧐

I was delighted to sit down with Alex Manos to discuss all things mouldy. But seriously, we did talk about mould. And, well, it’s a pretty complex topic.

Mould illness occurs when someone exposed to Mycotxins. These little blighters are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain moulds (fungi) and can be found in food. The moulds grow on a variety of different crops and foodstuffs including cereals, nuts, spices, dried fruits, apples, coffee beans and potentially more importantly, in your own home, often under warm and humid conditions. Now the thing is, at low levels, they’re often harmless but at high levels, especially in individuals who already immune compromised they can cause all sorts of bother.

This is because mycotoxins are neurotoxic and toxic to other organ systems such as the gut, skin, liver and kidneys. This means that the symptoms can be SO variable, they can often be mistaken as something else entirely. Mould illness can exacerbate pre existing conditions too like IBS, chronic fatigue, skin conditions and even autoimmune diseases.

Now if you live in the average home, it is likely you have seen mould somewhere, even if it’s a tiny amount around your bathroom or windows. But you shouldn’t panic about this - remember, these things don’t affect everyone but it’s important to be aware of what to watch out for and how to get tested if you think mould could be an issue for you.

We cover all of this, AND MUCH MORE, in the episode which is now available on all platforms 😀

#63 DR JEN UNWIN - THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL BARRIERS TO HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGE 🤔

Most of us understand that we should replace unhealthy habits for healthy ones but how many of us struggle to do this 🙋‍♂️ especially when it comes to food. I had the pleasure to sit down with Dr Jen Unwin for a fascinating podcast that we recorded last year and took a deep dive into the barriers to healthy lifestyle change.

Jen is a consultant clinical health psychologist who has spent her professional life focussing on the role of hope in chronic disease and how it can be used to bring about behaviour change and improve quality of life.

Her insights teamed up perfectly with Dr David Unwin’s interests in bringing about drug-free type 2 diabetes remission. For nine years they have been running group sessions in primary care to achieve just that!

Since retiring from the NHS, she has devoted her time to learning about, researching and helping others with sugar addiction. She has published a book called ‘Fork in the Road: A hopeful guide to food freedom’, the proceeds of which are for The Public Health Collaboration.

In this episode we cover:
- The addictive properties of food
- Answering the question 'are carbs addictive?'
- How to assess food addiction
- The major barriers to lifestyle change
- And much, much more

The conversation was hugely eye opening and I hope you find value in it! :)

INTEGRATIVE CANCER SUPPORT, WOMEN’S HEALTH AND RESEARCH WOES - new podcast with 🎙

We discuss a variety of topics ranging from integrating cancer therapy to our frustrations with research methodology. We highlight the diverse quality of scientific studies and why this can be problematic when trying to understand the efficacy of potential therapeutic interventions for any condition.

With regards to research, what immediately came to my mind were the studies investigating the potential therapeutic effect of certain vitamins and minerals. In some circumstances, no baseline nutrient status is measured. How can we possibly understand if a nutrient has a therapeutic effect for a particular condition above and beyond just correcting a deficiency if studies are not evaluating nutrient status to begin with? I’ll answer that - we can’t! This partly explains why there is substantial conflicting evidence when it comes to nutritional/orthomolecular interventions for specific conditions, and why discussing the use of certain interventions for specific conditions can be so polarising. Doctor Chris George is a NHS medical doctor and GP and in this episode we discuss his experience during the pandemic and ways to support mental and physical health and wellbeing. We talk about the increasing pressure on NHS and tips to overcome the many challanages the pandemic brought about for us all. Somehow, we got on to the topic dohnut making… 😋.

I first heard about Chris through . Shortly after, I met him during the first lockdown outside a lady’s house who every Thursday would sing to music out of her open window to entertain people during the pandemic - it was awesome!

Chris’s story into this space is not unlike many others in the field. Once he discovered the benefits of an evidence-based approach to lifestyle medicine and preventative healthcare he changed his perspective on the delivery of traditional medicine. He quickly moved into General Practice so that he could focus on a more holistic approach to healthcare. He is also one of nicest people and definitely a person you should follow :)
