I have struggled with putting my feelings into words the past few weeks watching the racism that is so prevalent in the world, and very notably in the United States. There isnât one post that can capture how disgusting and shameful our treatment of fellow human beings is. When the videos of black men being murdered are shared, they arenât immediately taken down or swift action to try and right the irreversible wrongs that have been committed doesnât happen. But when a dog dies after being placed in the overhead bin of an airplane, immediate apologies, statements, and changes to policy and procedure take place. Or videos of tragic deaths of white people that are posted online are immediately removed.
I am sorry for any time that I havenât acted to stop or prevent racism, and for times that I havenât said anything to lift up the voices of people who are suffering. It is easy and comfortable to express opinions about issues that I deem worthy because I will feel an impact, or that I perceive I will be impacted. It is also easy to feel overwhelmed by the injustice that exists, and wonder what impact I can have in combatting the systemic racism that props up our society and one that I benefit from. Justice is never easy though, and fighting for it is something we all need to actively participate in. There are resources that exist to help you engage in anti-racism work, I came across this one bit.ly/ANTIRACISMRESOURCES
When people use the term âdonât look awayâ it doesnât mean you have to watch footage of terrible crimes against humanity be committed, it asks you to take a look at your actions following learning of these crimes. Donât be complacent, and donât let the bad guys win.
