Another incredible course under the belt by on Hormone Advanced Practice Module.

I find the approach refreshing in the way that they teach you to look at an individual in their context, taking into consideration their relationships, stress, movement, nutrition and sleep.

The treatment plans offer improvement in these areas together with supplements, botanicals and pharmaceuticals. Together with the patient you can create a plan that they feel confident and comfortable will help them to feel their best.

On the back of Mother’s Day in the UK and my lovely cup of coffee I wanted to do a post on vitamins. Many of my patients ask whether it’s worth taking vitamins or if it all just gets wee’d out. The truth is that the food we eat is not grown in the same way as it used to be. Much of what we eat is grown or fed water that is mixed with chemicals and treatments that are part of the way the world runs. The soil is less nutritious than the back garden crops that families would grow to feed themselves. Food must be transported and preserved so as to last the longer storage times before being consumed. So good often holds less of the wonderful nutrients that our body needs.

Many of the nutrients are water soluble and do get flushed out but your body still absorbs what it can. Intravenous vitamins are therefore the best way of getting as much into the system as possible with sprays or drops that are absorbed through the mouth tissue being slightly better than tablets that must be processed through the gut. See latest video on iv vitamin infusions.

What you can see in the background of this picture is the various supplements I give to my children, husband and myself. Some of the most beneficial are Vitamin D, Omega 3 and a probiotic and my favourite brands are and

This doesn’t mean that we don’t eat fresh, as close to from the earth food that we can but means that we supplement our meals with a bit of extra nutrition. It’s always better to get what you can from the variety of foods that you eat.

Find your joy

A lot of people are struggling at this time of year especially with the strange months of COVID that we have behind us. People are tired and desperately trying to keep up with the close of year school or work commitments and to meet up with family and friends.

I’ve been speaking to a lot of my patients about finding ways to reach the ground and re-center. Find that thing that brings you joy to focus on when your world is spinning around you. It could be a prayer, deep breathing, a mantra or affirmation. Anything that will provide that warm hand to give you support.

* these are two little things that bring me joy - my gorgeous Christmas nails by and my magenta pink scrubs by

Netball has always been the thing that I do for myself. The feeling you get when you read the game and make an unexpected intercept or pass a perfectly placed ball. It’s invigorating and really makes me feel inspired.

These are the wonderful girls that I train and play with and our outing to see the play against Jamaica.

As a working mum, I wear two hats - one as a doctor and one as a wife, mum and friend. It’s almost like I’m two separate people when wearing each hat. At work I am calm, patient and always know what to do. At home I have made the decision not to doctor my children. When they are unwell, I look to the professionals as any other mother would.

This week has been more of me wearing my home hat. I had to give a close friend an infusion, my son had a bad bout of croup needing a late night A&E visit and a close friend has been navigating scary investigations into symptoms that she’s had for a while. Each situation made me feel anxious and out of my comfort zone. That usual confidence in the medical world felt blurred. I have had to remind myself that it is okay to be real and feel your emotions. It is alright to not have it all together in every situation. It is better to be real and to share

Improving the diagnosis and management of iron deficiency and anaemia.

I’ve spent the day brainstorming with some great midwives on how to improve the recognition of symptoms of iron deficiency by women and health care professionals.

These are just some of the symptoms that can be experienced when your iron ferritin stores are low.

Treating iron deficiency needs to be appropriate for the individual and should be monitored for its effect. It can take more than 6 months of oral iron supplementation before symptoms improve. An alternative to oral iron is an iron infusion.
