The thing about being an unpaid therapist is that….

You usually didn’t sign up to be!

Most times, you are the first born, and or have had to grow up quickly and because of that, have a lot of wisdom on your shoulders.

More often than not you have a complex relationship with asking for help and as a result are always seen as coping despite secretly wanting someone to notice that you need help.

You usually give the best advice but can find it hard to take that same advice yourself, although no one would ever know because you “always appear like you’ve got it all figured out”.

And you most likely experience periods of burn out, rescuer fatigue and, resentment - that goes unnoticed because you withdraw to recuperate, leaving no trace of your struggles behind.

As the unpaid therapist you don’t always realise that you need someone too. That if you become clear on your needs and intentional with your time, you might just find the courage to ask for the help you need too.

It will be scary.
It might not feel nice
But to the right person, it will be worth it!

How much attention do you pay for the things that you say?

Now this might sound like a stranger but trust me it’s important if you want to bring about any meaningful change in your life

Take time to think about the things that you say about yourself the things that you say about others and the things that you say in general

What life you created yourself by the things that you say

How are you teaching others to treat you buy the things that you say

How are the things that you say affect in the way that you treat yourself

Take five minutes right now to think about these things and let me know your thoughts on the comments

Do you get caught up in what you have not done?⁠

Trust me, I know this one very well! ⁠

It can be so easy to get caught up and bogged down with the things we have not managed to do. ⁠

Funnily enough, we never seem to get bogged down with the fact that we have not appreciated and praised ourselves when we had planned to - maybe something to start doing! ⁠

But anyway, I digress. It can be so easy to get bogged down in what you have not done, because society is always telling us we should be doing more. And if you have a "doing" personality type, then you have a double whammy of this! ⁠

When I work with my coaching clients, I get them to complete a pre-session coaching prep form. This details everything they have and have not done since the last session. My clients are always amazed at what they have managed to achieve. Most times, they don't even remember all the things they have done. And when I say achievements, it doesn't have to be crazy milestones. Even getting up and brushing your teeth is an achievement. ⁠

And in true form to my nature, this isn't something I only get my clients to do. I do this for myself too, and I can agree with them about how surprising this exercise can be. ⁠

So today, I am inviting you to do this with me (a shorter version of it). Take some time to write down your wins and reflect on them. ⁠
