Vision Care

Vision Care Free eyecare services for people affected by homelessness in the UK.

Vision Care for Homeless People (VCHP) provides free eye care services for people who are homeless or vulnerably housed in an accessible, friendly environment where they feel safe and welcome. Our mission is to preserve and protect the vision of homeless and vulnerable people in the UK who are unwilling or unable to access treatment through high street opticians. Our patients are particularly disadvantaged when it comes to obtaining eye care. They also suffer a higher level of eye problems than the general population. People need glasses to look for work, find accommodation or simply to keep themselves safe. To reach our patients we base our clinics in homeless centres and provide our eyecare services for free at the point of access. Through our existing clinics we reach around 8% of homeless people across England and aim to reach 40% in the future. CHARITY NUMBER:

Urgent call for ‘Christmassy artwork!
For the past 5 years we have raised funds and awareness with a special charity Christmas e card, inviting supporters to send our e card to their contacts and donate the money they would have spent on stamps or physical cards to support our clinics. Each year we’ve used some new Christmassy images – photographs, images of artwork such as lino prints and paintings. Can you help us find some fresh images for this Christmas? For questions, contact Alison at alison@visioncarecharity.org.uk

Our Birmingham clinic team was delighted to welcome Sheema Mustahsin and Graeme McLuckie from Théa Pharma UK 👋
Sheema and Graeme joined us to see our work in action and witness first-hand how the funds raised by Théa Pharma are helping to change lives.
Théa Pharma UK has partnered with Vision Care for the past two years — supporting our mission through initiatives such as donations from event ticket sales, Graeme’s team challenge to walk a “Mile a Day in May” and joining our London Homeless Collective Night Walk fundraiser earlier this year.
During their visit, they met with our fundraiser Alison Gordon, who shared our new strategy to champion access to eyecare for people affected by homelessness and explore new ways Théa can help us make an even bigger impact.
A special thank-you to Graeme for also leaving us with some Théa eyecare products to distribute to patients. 💙
Meanwhile, our Birmingham team were busy seeing patients at SIFA Fireside, where people sleeping rough can access hot meals, showers, clothing, and our free eye tests. Among those seen were:
👓 A patient whose eyesight had worsened and needed new varifocals
👁️‍🗨️ A first-time glasses wearer, also prescribed varifocals
🌍 A non-English-speaking patient, helped by a friend acting as translator, who left with ready readers the same day
We’re deeply grateful for Théa Pharma’s continued partnership, generosity, and belief in our mission to improve eye health for people affected by homelessness through direct services. and work to remove barriers through advocacy and education. 💙

Our ... was a week of action which saw the Vision Care team come together to change lives through sight-saving care. In just one week, we delivered 10 static clinics and 2 mobile clinics — reaching as many people as we usually do in a whole month. That’s 89 people who received essential sight tests.
More than 30 incredible volunteers gave over 150 hours of their time — some even travelling across the country to help. Our staff and trustees were out in force too, showing the power of what we can achieve together.
A huge shout-out to Specsavers for joining us in clinic delivery, and to Mondottica Group and Performance Finance Ltd for stepping up with fundraising challenges that raised vital funds and awareness.
And that’s not all — we proudly unveiled our new Vision Care brand identity and shared our upcoming five-year strategy to champion the right to sight for everyone affected by homelessness.
Thank you for standing with us. With your support, we’re building a future where no one is denied the right to sight because of their housing status.

3 clinics running today - from 'top' to 'bottom' - Edinburgh, Birmingham and Exeter. The volunteer teams did some sight tests - and dispensed glasses to patients who had come back in to collect their specs. The teams are always touched by the gratitude people express -
👓 A patient in their 50's who came in to collect a replacement pair of specs. They said they could 'see again' having lost the previous pair, they were very grateful for all we did. ❤️
👓 A patient who had a test today - ordered some glasses and is looking forward to being able to read
👓 A patient with no English - who used a translation app on their phone to get through their test a couple of weeks ago - was back in today to collect their specs - (via Google translate!) 'The world became clear!' ❤️
👓 A patient who had broken their glasses - and didn't know they could get a replacement pair until a worker at the host centre announced that Vision Care were in today and offering free eyecare, told us 'It's a very useful service. Thank you for your hard work and patience' ❤️

We’ve got six services running across the UK today- in Edinburgh, Bristol, Manchester, London, Brighton - at our clinic bases - plus a domi service at a Charles Berry House in Leicester, a health service for people experiencing homelessness - all aiming to help as many people as we can today by providing sight tests and eye health care, with the help of our wonderful volunteers, plus staff and trustees.

We've also been speaking with Shokat Adam who is Member of Parliament for Leicester South - and Afzal Khan- Member of Parliament for Manchester Rusholme - who have come to see our work first hand and to whom we'll be talking about the systemic barriers that deny people the right to sight.

And this afternoon members of the Mondottica Group team in London and Nottingham are walking to raise funds to support our future work fighting inequalities in eyecare. Figures of patients helped and pictures from the day to follow!

📢Today - on - which follows we are launching our new brand identity and strategy to strengthen our mission.

Vision Care(formerly Vision Care for Homeless People) champions the right to sight for all people affected by homelessness. Our charity provides free, essential eye care through clinics across the UK and works to remove barriers through advocacy, education, and research.

“Our new identity as Vision Care reflects both continuity and change. Our mission remains grounded in providing direct eye care services, but we are now broadening our focus to challenge the systemic barriers that deny people the right to sight. With a stronger, clearer identity, we can expand our reach, influence change, and ensure no one is left behind because of their housing status.” - Hannah Telfer - CEO
Founded in 2003, our volunteer-led clinics operate in partnership with leading optical organisations and homelessness services. In the past year, clinics have provided 1107 free sight tests and 1399 pairs of glasses to people experiencing homelessness.

▶ A new strategy for impact
Alongside our rebrand, Vision Care is preparing to launch a new five-year strategy, built around three strategic aims:
1. To become the leading authority on eye care for people experiencing homelessness.
2. To remove barriers to eye care for people experiencing homelessness by influencing policy and research.
3. To facilitate direct delivery of eye care services.

▶ Envisioning the future
Vision Care’s vision is simple yet powerful:
A future where no one is denied the right to sight because of their housing status.

.. 🌎 today's excitement in the lead up to - and of course today is WORLD SIGHT DAY!!!! - 🌎

We were pleased to run a clinic in Plymouth today – with a little help from Specsavers again. 🤝 Our VC volunteer – Stephen, who is also an optom with Specsavers Domi team in Plymouth came with his colleague Jade (thank you to their director 😊) to run a session at Shekinah Mission this afternoon. They saw 10 patients for sight tests, this included a patient with a very high minus prescription in both eyes who was making do with some old specs, plus a patient who was very nervous as had walked out of their last eye test as they felt the Optom wasn’t fully understanding of how sensitive their eyes were to light. The team succeeded with a full test using less light during health checks which made them feel more comfortable. They also referred a patient who has been trying to be registered as sight impaired, having been under hospital eye service since they were young. 👍
Claire Gorman from joined the team – bringing with her 5 students who set up in the main room with simulation specs 👓 to chat with service users about the importance of eye health and regular sight tests, encouraging centre users to take up the offer of a free sight test. 👁️

Meanwhile up country... Our Birmingham team were running an extra clinic at SIFA Fireside and our London team were seeing patients at the Vision Care clinic at Crisis Skylight. 👏
