Schizophrenia affects roughly 1 in 300 people worldwide, with a higher rate among adults (1 in 222). The condition is more common in men and typically manifests during late adolescence or early adulthood. It's also a significant cause of disability and can lead to shorter life expectancies due to physical health problems and suicide. Key Facts and Statistics:
Global Prevalence:
Approximately 24 million people globally are affected by schizophrenia, translating to about 0.32% of the world's population. Gender and Age:
While schizophrenia can affect anyone, it tends to onset earlier in men (late adolescence to early twenties) than in women (early twenties to early thirties). Impact on Life:
Schizophrenia can significantly impair personal, family, social, and educational functioning. Suicide Risk:
People with schizophrenia are at a higher risk of suicide than the general population, with studies showing a 5-10% chance of dying by suicide within ten years of diagnosis. Treatment and Recovery:
While schizophrenia is a chronic condition, effective treatments (like antipsychotic medications and psychosocial therapies) are available and can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Disparities in Access to Care:
A significant portion of individuals with schizophrenia, particularly in developing countries, may not receive adequate treatment. Early Detection and Intervention:
Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes and reducing the risk of long-term complications, such as severe physical health problems and disability. This is for informational purposes only. For medical advice or diagnosis, consult a professional. PAGE/GROUP/ADMINS/MODERTORS

๐Ÿง  Persistent lack of sleep in early childhood may raise risk of psychosis later in life, study warns

A groundbreaking study from the University of Birmingham has revealed that children who consistently sleep fewer hours from infancy through age 7 face a much greater risk of severe mental health issues in adulthood.

Using data from more than 12,000 participants in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, researchers found that persistent short sleep across childhood was linked to:

โ€ข 2x higher likelihood of developing a psychotic disorder.

โ€ข Nearly 4x higher risk of experiencing a psychotic episode by early adulthood.

This is the first research to establish that itโ€™s not just isolated sleep problems, but a continuous pattern of poor sleep throughout childhood that may significantly impact long-term mental health.

Interestingly, blood tests taken at age nine suggested that inflammation could partly explain this connection. Higher levels of inflammatory markers in children with sleep issues were associated with later psychosis risk, though other biological and environmental factors may also be involved.

Lead researcher Dr. Isabel Morales-Muรฑoz emphasized that sleep problems in childhood are often treatable. Intervening early may help reduce the risk of serious psychiatric conditions in the future. The study is part of the NIHR-funded Midlands Mental Health Mission, which focuses on improving prevention and care strategies for mental illness.
