If the goal of climbing a flight of stairs is improved health and longevity, the Harvard Alumni Health study reported that climbing 10-19 flights a week (two to four flights per day) reduces mortality risk. Stair climbing can be accumulated across the course of the day, making a significant contribution to the recommended 30 minutes of daily physical activity. If this doesn't really attract your attention, stair climbing burns 8 - 11kcal of energy per minute, which is high compared to other moderate level physical activities. Putting it more simple-even two flights of stairs climbed per day can lead to 6 lbs of weight loss over one year.
Otherwise active stair climbers are more fit and have a higher aerobic capacity. The advise for those of the more elderly group, stair climbing increases leg power and may be an important priority in reducing the risk of injury from falls in the elderly.
Let us not take this for granted and start making these simple changes in your lifestyle to see the long term effects.
