The RSV vaccine is now reported to be 82% effective in preventing hospital admissions among adults aged 75–79, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency. Maternal RSV vaccination has also been shown to reduce infant hospitalisations by 72% when administered at least 14 days before birth.

Pharmacy professionals are playing a pivotal role in the national RSV rollout, as NHS England plans to expand pharmacy participation from 50 to 200 sites by 2025–26. From increasing uptake to guiding patient conversations, pharmacy teams remain vital to protecting vulnerable groups.

As of 30 June 2025, 62.9% of eligible older adults had received the vaccine, and over 20,000 pregnant women were vaccinated earlier this year.

NHS England has published the 2025/26 community pharmacy flu vaccination service specification – but the fee for delivering jabs remains undecided. Community Pharmacy England has submitted a case for an increase and is awaiting a ministerial decision.

Pharmacy professionals, this year’s updates include commissioner approval for off-site vaccinations and clearer responsibility for the pharmacist in charge. Eligibility now extends to those turning 50 or 60 by 31 March 2026, as well as carers and household contacts.

Vaccinations for pregnant women start from 1 September, with other adult groups from 1 October. The PGD and national protocol will be published soon.

The MHRA has become the first regulator in the world to approve elinzanetant (Lynkuet)—a new non-hormonal treatment for moderate to severe hot flushes and night sweats during menopause.

Developed by Bayer, Lynkuet targets overactive brain cells triggered by falling estrogen levels, helping to restore temperature regulation. Results from an international trial of over 1,400 women showed the 120mg daily tablet was significantly more effective than placebo.

Certain hormonal contraceptives, such as the vaginal ring and skin patch, slightly increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. However, the levonorgestrel-releasing IUD does not carry the same risk.

Women in England who’ve missed cervical screening appointments will soon receive HPV self-sampling kits at home, under a new NHS initiative to improve early detection. With screening uptake at just 68.8%—well below the NHS target of 80%—over 5 million women are currently overdue. The new home-testing kits will focus on reaching groups less likely to attend in person, including younger women, ethnic minority communities, disabled individuals, and LGBT+ groups.

Pharmacists, your daily interactions with patients put you in a vital position to raise awareness. Whether through in-store conversations or simple signposting, your role can help increase uptake of this potentially life-saving screening.

Those testing positive for HPV will be invited for follow-up clinician-led checks. From July, women aged 25–49 who test negative will move to five-year intervals between screenings, in line with national guidance.

NHS England has confirmed the dates for the 2025/26 autumn and winter flu and Covid-19 vaccination programmes. Flu vaccinations for pregnant women and eligible children begin on 1 September, with school-based vaccinations due to finish by 12 December. All other adult cohorts will begin from 1 October and continue until 31 March 2026, with the majority completed by the end of November.

The Covid-19 programme runs from October to 31 January 2026, covering older adult care home residents, adults aged 75 and over, and those aged 6 months+ who are immunosuppressed.

Pharmacy professionals—your role in this rollout is vital. NHSE supports co-administering flu and Covid vaccines where appropriate. Please note: payments will only be made for vaccinations delivered from the official programme start dates.

The National Booking System opens to sites from 18 August, with public booking available from 1 September.

By combining GPhC’s regulatory oversight with Pharmacist Support’s free, confidential services, the partnership aims to improve access to mental health resources, enhance information sharing, and support safer working environments.
