Overheard ‘they’ll grow out of it’—not helpful when you’re exhausted. Instead of waiting, try a darkened room with a soft star projector. My son slept like a log. Intrigued? Comment TIPS

Contact naps are snuggly and lovely but can get to be a lot if they are the only place your baby will sleep.

You can make small changes, you can try a cot or pram nap.

Small steps lead to big progress.

Short naps are one of the most frustrating parts of baby sleep,
but they’re rarely random.

Here’s what usually causes them:

💛 Too short or too long wake windows
If the timing is off, the nap will be too.

💛 Falling asleep during the feed or the routine
Drowsy babies = short naps.
(Their brain didn’t fully “switch off.”)

💛 Not enough sleep pressure
If they were already half-rested from a long previous nap or early bedtime,
they won’t link cycles.

💛 Room environment
Daytime light, noise, temperature , naps are lighter than nights.

💛 Needing help to fall asleep
If you get them all the way to sleep,
they’ll need you again at the 30-minute mark.

💛 Developmentally normal.
Babies under 6 months will very often only do shorter naps and this is normal.

Once you fix the why, naps can lengthen surprisingly fast.

There’s no prize for struggling through alone.

Mums get praised for ‘just getting on with it’ – but what if we praised asking for help instead?

Sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s a basic need.

If I were sleep training your baby, here’s exactly what I’d fix first:

Most parents think they need a new routine or a magic trick…

but the real problem usually starts at how your baby falls asleep at bedtime.

Because babies repeat what they learn:

If they fall asleep with rocking/feeding/holding, they’ll wake needing the same thing.

Not your fault, it’s just how sleep works.

Here’s what I fix first:

1️⃣ Shift anything sleep-inducing earlier in the routine (feed/rock/cuddle, but not as the last step).
2️⃣ Put baby down fully awake, not drowsy. This is the biggest game-changer for night waking.
3️⃣ Keep your response overnight consistent. Same plan every wake = faster progress.

Once this piece clicks, nights, naps and early wakes all get easier.

It’s for tired-but-coping mums. It’s for ‘I think we’re okay but I’m losing my mind a bit’ mums. It’s for *you*, even if things aren’t completely falling apart.
