Breathe Arts Health Research

Breathe Arts Health Research Breathe Arts Health Research (Breathe) designs and delivers creative programmes, underpinned by scientific research, to improve health and wellbeing.

Our work is co-designed with artists, scientists, healthcare staff and patients, to meet specific clinical and wellbeing needs. We deliver a diverse range of evidence-based participatory programmes and live performance events across a range of art forms, including dance, music, visual art, poetry and magic. Breathe is a values driven organisation, with a small team who make a big impact. Our innovative and artistic approach to transforming healthcare experiences, offer those we work with, a sense of empowerment, hope and creative fulfilment when they need it most. Breathe are delighted to be one of the first arts and health companies to be recognised by NHS England for our work. Patients and communities can access our programmes through referrals from a healthcare practitioner or link worker – making our work part of mainstream healthcare. To help achieve this, we back up our creative approaches with robust clinical research. Our programmes are developed in collaboration with leading healthcare professionals and cultural partners worldwide, then assessed for its medical and economic value. Our research papers are published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Breathe also offers consultancy services in healthcare and business, including corporate communications training, unique team building opportunities and keynote speakers.

📣 We just wanted to give a big Breathe shoutout to the incredible team of occupational therapists and physiotherapists who worked on this year’s Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme 💫🪄

Over 2 weeks, they delivered goal-orientated, 121 therapy in a group setting, to 14 young people with hemiplegia. Together with our clinical lead occupational therapists, and our Breathe Magic magicians, they worked to help our young people build confidence, strength, and independence through the combined power of occupational therapy and magic. 💪✨

We’re proud to be surrounded by such dedicated professionals, and we’re super excited to be heading to the OT Show in Birmingham on November 26 - 27 to celebrate the power of occupational therapy. Come visit us on our stand and say hello! 🧡

Motherhood is beautiful… but it can also be overwhelming, exhausting, and lonely at times. Those early months are full of love and wonder, but also change, uncertainty, and a whole new version of you to discover.

That’s why we’ve created Breathe Melodies for Mums: a FREE 10-week singing programme for new mums with babies aged 0–9 months, a safe, nurturing space to unwind, connect, and feel uplifted.

Every week, you’ll:
🎵 Sing beautiful songs from around the world
💜 Boost your mood, confidence, and self-esteem
🤝 Meet a warm community of other mums
🌿 Enjoy precious time for yourself
✨ Feel uplifted, energised, and supported

The power of singing together has been proven to support mental wellbeing, boost confidence, and strengthen the bond between you and your baby.

One of the most amazing things about Breathe Magic camp 🎩 is that so many of our Young Magicians from previous camps come back to join us again as mentors. ❤️

This year we've been blessed with four incredible mentors who originally joined us at camps from 2014 through to 2016. ✨

They've been an absolute inspiration to this year's Young Magicians - sharing their own experiences of camp and what they've gone on to achieve since. We couldn't be prouder of them 👏

It’s not all learning magic tricks 🎩🪄 at Breathe Magic Camp. We practice Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) every day as well.

Whether that’s tying the laces on their favourite football boots ⚽️, perfecting the perfect plait 🎀, or putting on some false eyelashes, our Young Magicians work so hard at mastering their chosen activities.

Wow!! The first day of the 2025 Adelaide Herrman Breathe Magic Camp was an absolute blast!! 🎩🪄🤩

After a mind-boggling show from our Magic Circle Magicians, this year’s Young Magicians kicked off their magic learning with the rope cutter trick 🪄and the amazing jumping bands - we’ve got to tell you - they’re absolute pros already!👏🏽

Then we headed outside 🌳 for some fresh air and a super fun bimanual play session including noodle hockey 🏑 before getting creative with some magic bag making back at our incredible venue Sea Containers London. 🪡

Watch out for lots more Breathe Magic fun over the next couple of weeks 👀 😊

Here’s a glimpse of Breathe Resident Musician Markus Michellucci and Dean Josephs, from the Therapeutic & Specialised Play Service at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, pausing outside between music visits.

Working closely with Dean and the hospital’s amazing team of Play Specialists, Marcus brings calming and uplifting music directly to young patients across the wards.

From Disney favourites to The Beatles, each session offers a moment of joy, connection and comfort for everyone listening, whether at a bedside or passing through the corridor.

We were so touched when the incredibly talented , who recently attended one of our Breathe Melodies for Mums sessions, shared this beautiful illustration inspired by her experience 💜

She loved the programme so much, she created this gorgeous piece for us… and we’re totally in love with it. 🥹🎶

🌞 As the school year wraps up and summer approaches, we’re reflecting on an incredible final term of Breathe Magic for Mental Health!

✨Swipe through to see some heartwarming moments from two of the Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) we’ve been working with recently. These snapshots capture just a glimpse of the creativity, connection, and confidence-building that takes place through the programme.

💫 Rooted in over a decade of research and feedback from our award-winning Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme, Breathe Magic for Mental Health (BMMH) is designed to support children and young people with a wide range of challenges — helping to improve wellbeing, boost resilience, and foster joy through the power of magic and the arts.

💙 Here’s to a summer of rest, reflection and magic. Thank you to all the schools, staff, and incredible young people we’ve worked with this term!

Last Wednesday we had the most amazing night with our friends at the Magicians Table - a jaw-dropping, immersive magic show featuring some of the UK’s finest magicians, live music and theatre! 🎭 🎩🎶

We’re thrilled to be their chosen charity and we went along with one of our Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme alumni, Riley, to talk about the programme.

Riley joined us as a Young Magician on camp back in 2015 and he’s now helping us spread the word as one of our Breathe Magic Ambassadors 🤩🎩

The Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy is an innovative two-week programme that uses the art of magic to work with young people with a brain injury on their bimanual skills, confidence, and independence. This year’s programme kicks off at the end of the month and we couldn’t be more excited. 🎉
