“‘It’s your age.’ Annoying, patronising - and only half the story. Age explains some things, but thank f**k it’s not the whole truth.”
If you’re anything like me, you can remember every word to a random 80’s pop song on the radio - but can’t remember why you just walked into the kitchen.
Bending down or getting up from a chair now comes with its own soundtrack of involuntary grunts and groans.
And you’re calling the kids by the dog’s name (when you don’t even have a dog).
But I don’t think the problem is that we’re getting older.
The bigger problem is how quick people are to dismiss us with a shrug and a defeatist, “well, it’s your age.”
Yes, some things change with age. Those “bloody hell I’m getting old” moments are real.
But writing off every stiff joint, blank stare moment, or weight shift as “inevitable” keeps us buying into the myth that there’s nothing we can do.
Which is BS.
You don’t need to feel 25 again. But you don’t need to feel 105 either. Settling for “it’s your age” means giving up too soon - and I know you’re not done yet.
