Happy Anniversary Football Yoga 🥳⚽️🧘🏽‍♀️

This time 7 years ago Football Yoga was created, on a beach in Thailand. 😍

After a few years of already integrating yoga into my private 1:1 work with players, and the amazing result these guys were having. I realised that the big gap missing in football is Holistic Well-being.

At that point in my career I’d already been working 8 years in professional football.
And prior coming to Thailand, I’d spent 4 months on a self funded work-study trip in Central & North America. While there I met up with people working in football, spent time at football clubs, and gathered knowledge from all aspects of the game. Plus did my Yoga Therapy Teacher Training.
During this trip I became even more aware that the missing link in football and for players to THRIVE, and have LONG, HEALTHY, and HAPPY CAREERS is to take care of themselves holistically.
Meaning the care of the entire person in all aspects of well-being, ie physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual etc.

So founding Football Yoga and leaving Arsenal, once back from Asia, to pursuit my visions & ideas and serving players globally full-time was a dream that was birthed during this period,
in January 2016 in Thailand 🥰

Mobility is key! 🔑

Flexibility is a muscle’s ability to lengthen passively, or without engagement - when you perform static stretches.

Mobility, on the other hand, related to the joints and their ability to move actively through their full range of motion.

When a goal keeper raises their leg for a sidewinder volley from their hands or when a striker attempts a long-range shot, these actions require good mobility in the hips, knee and lower back.

The better your mobility, the easier these actions become.

To have good mobility, you do need strength, stability and flexibility.

Core Strength 🏋️

The Core is not just your six-pack. The Core is composed of as many as 35 different muscle groups connecting into the pelvis from the spine and hip area.

The Core is where power, strength, endurance and balance originate.

It is what helps us stand up, stay standing, propel forward into a walk, run or skip, change directions, stop at a moment’s notice and breathe through it all.

Without a solid Core, you will be less effective on the pitch.

Yoga offers a way to train your core; though poses like the Side Plank, the Boat Pose or the Dolphin pose 🐬

Balance is key for every footballer.

Each time you are on one leg hoping over a tackle or shifting your weight from one leg to another, when bursting past a defender, you are using balance.

Your ability to move efficiently requires control of the body's postural alignment. This means, you need strong balance to move efficiently.

You can improve your balance through a range of yoga poses. The Tree Pose, often used by for his celebration, is a great pose to practice or the Warrior 3 pose in this picture 🙏🏼

Footballers lack flexibility 😫

If you are playing regular football and not taking the time to stretch properly after every training session and match, then it is highly likely you will be inflexible, immobile and storing lots of tension in your muscles.

The main two areas most footballers face the greatest tension are in the hips and hamstrings.

It’s important to be flexible because it will help to reduce the risk of injury, release stress and help to improve your performance.

Regular yoga practice can help you improve your flexibility 😁
