Weekly Alert - Replacing dietary carbohydrate with protein and fat improves lipoprotein subclass profile and liver fat in type 2 diabetes independent of body weight: evidence from 2 randomized controlled trials in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 2025.

With Expert Review from Karin Elgar, PhD

For many years, diets low in fat and rich in carbohydrates have been recommended for improvements to T2D. More recently opinion is changing, and the restriction of dietary carbohydrates has been shown to improve glycaemia, diabetic dyslipidaemia, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease ( ).

This study aimed to determine whether carbohydrate restriction associated body weight and plasma lipoprotein changes may be driven by hepatic fat loss in individuals with T2D. This was a secondary analysis of two 6-week randomised control trials totalling 102 individuals, evaluating a carbohydrate-reduced high-protein (CRHP) diet and a conventional diabetes (CD) diet.

The results showed no differences in weight loss between the two diets. Compared to CD, the CRHP diet improved triacylglycerol-rich lipoproteins (TRL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein levels. Hepatic triacylglycerols were more improved with the CRHP diet and this directly correlated with changes in serum TRLs and LDLs.

The authors concluded that replacing carbohydrates with fat and protein improves through reduced hepatic fat, independent of changes in body weight.

Weekly Alert - A 3-Week Ketogenic Diet Increases Skeletal Muscle Insulin Sensitivity in Individuals With Obesity: A Randomized Controlled Crossover Trial in Diabetes. 2024. With Expert Review from Chloe Steele

The diet (KD) has been shown to improve sensitivity and decrease the reliance on drugs in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), however the mechanisms are unclear.

This study aimed to determine the effects of a 3-week ketogenic diet on sensitivity in individuals with . This study was a randomised control cross-over trial of 11 individuals who were assigned to either a KD or standard diet for 3-weeks and then switched after a wash-out period.

The results showed that the KD led to 2.2kg weight loss, improved muscle insulin sensitivity, and poorer adipose tissue insulin sensitivity. No changes were seen in liver insulin sensitivity. The authors concluded that the KD may initiate opposing organ specific effects on insulin sensitivity.

BANT Registered Nutritional Therapist Katharine Tate, The Food Teacher™ Meets HRH The Princess Royal at UK's First & Health Festival and Launches Free School Programme

BANT-registered Nutritional Therapist Katharine Tate, founder of The Food Teacher™ and creator of the National Young Chef Awards for Schools, had the honour of meeting HRH The Princess Royal at Inside Out, the UK's first festival dedicated to microbiome and gut health. Katharine worked with Global Healthcare Projects (GHP) as Education Project Lead, playing an instrumental role in the festival's success and showcasing to the public the expertise of microbiome experts including several PSA-accredited practitioners.

The festival, held in London from 22nd–27th September 2025, brought together leading experts, and the public to explore cutting-edge science on the gut microbiome. Highlights included a 37-foot immersive inflatable gut, expert talks, and live chef demonstrations, giving attendees a unique, hands-on experience of how microbes affect health, food, and the environment.

In collaboration with Global Healthcare projects, Katharine Tate has launched The Micro Matrix, a free, curriculum-mapped programme for primary schools (KS1–KS2). The six-hour programme includes interactive lessons, assemblies, teacher guides, and make-at-home recipes, all designed to link classroom learning to the science of the gut microbiome.

Resources are fully aligned with the National Curriculum and available free online at www.themicromatrix.com.

Katharine Tate commented, "It was such an honour to meet HRH The Princess Royal at Inside Out. As Education Project Lead, I was proud to help deliver a festival that celebrated nutrition and microbiome science and elevated the role of NT's within education and health. I'm thrilled that The Micro Matrix can now bring this learning into schools, and sharing it with schools in your area can have a huge impact in inspiring children to make healthy, sustainable choices from an early age."

Jola Gore-Booth, Founder and Director of GHP, added, "The success of Inside Out reflects the growing public interest in gut health. Katharine's leadership as Education Project Lead was instrumental, and the inclusion of many BANT experts on the speaker stage highlighted the role of personalised nutrition. Promoting The Micro Matrix to schools in your area will ensure this valuable resource reaches as many children and families as possible, encouraging positive change at a crucial stage in their development."

Schools are encouraged to access and deliver the programme, and any promotion or sharing with schools and teachers will be hugely beneficial to children and families.

BANT Event - Liver Health & Detoxification Saturday, Nov 8, 2025 at 9:15 AM to 5:00 PM GMT

Introducing Dr Jenny Goodman, medical doctor, author, lecturer and broadcaster.

In her early career, Jenny worked as a junior in General Medicine, Surgery and A&E. Disillusioned with conventional medicine’s failure to enquire about the causes of illness or to do preventive healthcare, she left. In the 1990s she was lucky enough to discover the British Society for Ecological Medicine, a group of doctors and other practitioners who practise and medicine. They were asking the same questions that had gone unanswered for her throughout medical school. And they were finding answers, helping their patients to attain dramatically better health through changes in and , and through .

Jenny now teaches regularly at the British Society for Ecological Medicine, and has taught at numerous other places including the ION - Institute for Optimum Nutrition, Herbfest, the CNM College of Naturopathic Medicine and many, many more.

Having studied the environmental history of hundreds of patients, she is now deeply committed to explaining the bigger picture – that what we are doing on our farms and elsewhere on our planet profoundly affects the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe, and therefore affects the health of our bodies and minds. This could be summed up as a transition from Pharma to Farmer.
