Did you know, The Portland Hospital is the only private paediatric hospital in the UK which has the EOSedgeTM.

This, ultra-low dose, full-body musculoskeletal X-ray scanner allows us to image patients in their natural weight bearing state, and create a 3D image of the whole musculoskeletal system - including the spine, pelvis, hips and lower limbs, to provide one detailed view.

Taking just 20 seconds, the EOSedgeTM uses a significantly lower radiation dose than a standard X-ray and delivers exceptionally high-quality images, helping support accurate diagnosis while keeping radiation exposure to a minimum.

🎥 Watch here as Brendan Belton, Imaging Manager at HCA UK’s The Portland Hospital, shares more about how EOSedgeTM supports safer, smarter imaging.

❤️National Heart Month ❤️ Alan's story

Despite years of experiencing heart problems, Alan was nervous about having surgery. But the expertise of his consultant Dr Martin Lowe and the opportunity of treatment using the latest in atrial fibrillation technology gave him the reassurance to go ahead.

Alan was treated using the Medtronic Affera ablation system, which has been exclusive to HCA UK's The Harley Street Clinic. It uses just one catheter to target the cells causing an irregular heart rhythm and can switch between radiofrequency ablation and pulsed field ablation, as required.

In the months following his treatment, Alan hasn't had any issues or recurring symptoms, and these health improvements have come as a huge relief. “As soon as they went in, they could see what the problem was,” he says. “Dr Lowe is sure he’s fixed it, and that’s good enough for me!”

“As an engineer, the benefits of robotic surgery are mind boggling - my recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. I have new faith in humanity after this experience.”

This Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing the inspiring story of Gordon Murray, world-renowned F1 engineer and automotive pioneer.

After years of surveillance for symptoms linked to Barrett’s oesophagus, Gordon was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a type of oesophageal cancer. Under the care of expert surgeon Professor Shaun Preston at London Bridge Hospital, Gordon received a robotic-assisted oesophagectomy using the advanced da Vinci Xi system.

The precision and minimally invasive nature of robotic surgery helped Gordon recover much faster than he would have with traditional surgery, allowing him to return to his passion for engineering just months after surgery.

Professor Shaun Preston shares, “He returned to working 10-hour days at 78 years old, just five months post-surgery - the results speak for themselves. His case is a brilliant example of how robotic surgery can improve outcomes for patients with oesophageal cancer - with greater precision, minimised risks, and less pain and discomfort post-surgery. It has been a privilege being his surgeon, guiding him through recovery, and seeing him get back to what he does best.”

Gordon’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of early diagnosis and cutting-edge surgical innovation in improving outcomes for patients with oesophageal cancer.

♥️ National Heart Health Month – Team Spotlight ♥️

Meet Usha Gopalan, Cardiac Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) at The Wellington Hospital. Usha supports patients thorough their cardiac care, from initial diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.

“I’ve been with HCA UK for 20 years now, as a CNS I co-ordinate patients care and provide clinical guidance, emotional support, and education to help patients understand their condition and treatment options, ensuring they feel cared for and informed at every stage.

I am the link between patients, families and the wider multidisciplinary team, making sure every person receives a personalised care plan based on their unique needs, not just their diagnosis, and ensuring a seamless transition across services.

The most rewarding part of my role is building relationships with patients and seeing the positive impact that the reassurance, education, and continuity of care I provide can have on their confidence and recovery.

This heart health month I want patients to know they aren’t alone. Facing a heart condition can be a daunting and overwhelming experience, but CNSs like me are here to listen, guide and inform you every step of the way.”

We’re incredibly proud of the care that Usha and our team of CNSs across HCA UK provide. Every day they go above and beyond to improve the lives of people affected by heart conditions.

This International Women & Girls in Science Day, we’re celebrating what happens when women in science are truly supported, not just to join, but to grow, lead and thrive.

When Laboratory Training Manager, Victoria Moyse joined HCA UK, she brought more than two decades of experience as a biomedical scientist and a passion for training and development. What inspired her most was the opportunity to build something meaningful, creating career pathways and training programmes that would support lab colleagues at every stage of their journey.

That impact is reflected every day in our labs, in teams working side by side, sharing knowledge, encouraging one another and creating a positive, collaborative environment where women feel valued and supported.

“I see a genuine desire to help each other grow. Even when we’re faced with challenges, everyone gets involved and works together to make things happen.”

For Victoria, the most rewarding part of her role is watching trainees grow in confidence and capability and see them develop, progress and feel proud of the work they do.

♥️ National Heart Health Month – Team Spotlight ♥️

Meet Paisley, Cardiac Physiologist at The Harborne Hospital. Paisley and the wider team provide expert care for people with heart rhythm disorders. Collaborating closely with expert cardiologists, nurses and the theatre team, they diagnose conditions, carry out procedures in our state-of -the-art cath lab, and care for patients who are staying with us in hospital.

“I’m often one of the first people patients meet when they come in with worrying symptoms. It’s incredibly rewarding to meet someone at a time when their symptoms are really impacting their life, helping to diagnose the problem, supporting their treatment and then seeing them in clinic. I’m involved at every stage of their journey and provide fully integrated care with the wider cardiac team. This care helps build trust and allows us to pick up problems early, tailor treatment and really make a difference to how patients feel and live their lives. Being part of that full cycle of care and seeing patients return feeling better is the most rewarding part of my role.

This heart health month I would encourage everyone to prioritise their heart health, many heart conditions progress quietly, so identifying issues before symptoms become severe allows us to intervene sooner and prevent complications.”

A huge thank you to Paisley and our cardiac teams across HCA Healthcare UK are committed to improving the lives of people affected by heart conditions.
