1️⃣ Routines for naps and night time sleep. Trying to get into a rigid schedule is like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom- pointless and frustrating! Your baby is meant to wake up frequently to feed. Their sleep system is still immature and they are only just starting to produce melatonin (sleepy hormone) and develop a circadian rhythm (day and night sleep cycles). Sleep is going to be all over the place and it’s totally normal! Respond to sleep cues, lean into contact naps and embrace going with the flow.

2️⃣ “Spoiling” your baby by picking them up and letting them contact nap or fall asleep on the boob/bottle. This is NOT a thing so stop worrying. Your newborn has spent most of their life curled up in your safe warm tummy with the sound of your heart beat and your scent all around them. In the 4th trimester this is all they want to continue to do. You won’t cause any lasting habits during this time so don’t miss out on this special window.

3️⃣ A clean house like you used to have. The dishes can wait a couple more hours and the laundry can wait until tomorrow. Seriously. You’ll only stress yourself out trying to do and be everything. Just be a potato on the couch with your little baby. That’s enough for now.

4️⃣ Bouncing back… take the pressure off yourself! Your body has grown an entire human and a whole new organ (placenta) AND you are going through huge hormonal changes and learning how to keep a little person alive and loved. Give yourself a break and use this time to recover, rest, and refuel❤️

5️⃣ Going out everyday or being the best at feeding your baby! So what if there is someone on instagram who can pump 1L of breast milk a day?!..that’s not most people. So what if there are mums going out to classes and walks already but you actually just feel like being at home?! that’s not most people… what you see on social media or have pop up on WhatsApp groups can make you set unrealistic expectations of yourself or your baby. You do you! Let me do them! 🫶🏼

⚠️NEWS ALERT!‼️

Sleep coaches ger a bad rep because for some reason people think we are here to make you/ suggest that you let your baby cry it out or do things that make you uncomfortable. This is simply not the case!

I am a mother. I totally get the heart wrenching feeling when my baby cries. I also want to cuddle my baby and do contacts naps. So why would I suggest you do anything other than what you feel 100% confortabke with.

If you want to continue doing things you love then just say so 💕

How long should my baby be able to sleep at night before waking? 🌙

Every baby is different with some only managing shorter blocks and others longer. Often there are multiple factors at play like the sleep environment, nutrition, the right amount of day time sleep (not too much or too little), other factors like reflux etc.

Some of you will be surprised to see that children from 10 months until 3.5yrs old only need around 11-12 hours of sleep an night- it’s their amount of day time sleep that will be different.

So be mindful if you’re expecting your child to sleep for more than 11-12 hours at night time when looking at their bedtime and wake up time.

If you are wanting a 7pm bedtime but can’t seem to get them down before 9 or 10 pm - they may need some looking at their day time sleep to make sure they are tired enough for bedtime and tired enough to sleep through the night.

🚨 Top 3 Bedtime Mistakes people make 🚨
Even small habits can impact your little one’s sleep. Watch out for:

1️⃣ Bright lights during wind-down 💡 – they signal “wake up,” making settling harder.

2️⃣ Doing the routine in the living room/lounge 🛋️ – distractions can keep your child alert.

3️⃣ Leaving a night light on 🌙 – most babies under 2.5 years old can’t actually be scared of the dark, so a night light isn’t usually necessary.

Making these simple tweaks helps your child settle faster and sleep more soundly — because bedtime should be calm, consistent, and cozy. 💛

Is your baby perhaps scared of the dark? 🌚

Babies and toddlers under roughly 2.5 years old generally don’t have the cognitive ability to understand the concept of “being scared of the dark.” Here’s why 👆🏼

Consistency + calm = better sleep for little ones (and parents too 😉).

Why is my 4-month-old thumping their legs at night? 💥👶

At around 4 months, babies’ sleep cycles mature and begin to resemble adult patterns, which include alternating between active (REM) and quiet (non-REM) sleep.

Here’s how active sleep relates to the leg thumping:

💤 ACTIVE (REM) SLEEP & MOVEMENT

• During active sleep, a baby’s brain is very busy — processing information, consolidating learning, and developing motor patterns.

•The body isn’t fully still: babies often twitch, kick, squirm, grunt, or even thump their legs as their nervous system develops.

•These movements can look purposeful but are usually involuntary, part of normal neurological maturation.

🌙 TRANSITIONS BETWEEN SLEEP CYCLES

• Around the 4-month mark, babies start to cycle through light and deep sleep more frequently (every 40–50 minutes).

• The leg thumping often appears during these transitions — a semi-awake state where their body moves, but they’re not fully conscious.

🧠 WHY ITS A POSITIVE SIGN

• Shows healthy neurological and motor development.

• Reflects active sensory exploration, even during sleep.

• Often fades as the nervous system matures and sleep becomes more consolidated.

🌟 TIPS

• Put your white noise between you and the baby so you hear the thumping less

• Move the cot a few meters further away from your bed

• Keep your baby swaddled unless they are showing signs of rolling which can signal readiness to unstable. This may stop the active sleep movement from waking your baby.

• if you are worried and think it might be something more then call your GP. You know your baby best
