We’re hosting a week of events in London (both online and in-person) this March for anyone who’s sensitive to noise. That’s 1 in 3 of the population, including those who are hard of hearing, neurodivergent, over 55, or living with conditions such as tinnitus and hyperacusis.

If you get overwhelmed in noisy restaurants, avoid live music because you’re worried it’s going to be too loud, or hate taking the tube because of the noise levels, the Hearing Wellness Week programme will have something for you.

Join us on 8th March for an unplugged celebration of music and connection at SJQ, as part of Hearing Wellness Week. ✨

We’re welcoming two exceptional artists:

🎶 Sophie Wright – a folk singer-songwriter whose evocative voice and lyrical storytelling are both intimate and powerful.

🎶 Adam Beattie – a Scottish songwriter blending traditional melodic roots with distinctive vocals and narrative depth.

All Sownd Affects gigs are curated with noise sensitivity in mind - so more people can enjoy live music without overwhelm.

This event also celebrates one year since SJQ began its journey to becoming an audio-inclusive grassroots venue, funded by Arts Council England and facilitated by Oscar Acoustics.

"Most of us think of pollution as something we can see - smog, litter, traffic fumes.

But noise pollution? It’s invisible - and it’s a public health issue.

According to the Health Organization, environmental noise is one of the leading environmental risks to health in Europe - second only to air pollution.

And it doesn’t just affect our ears. Traffic. Sirens. Construction. Layered café music. Open-plan offices. The constant hum of modern life.

Over time, long-term noise exposure has been linked by the European Environment Agency to:

👉 Increased stress
👉 Sleep disruption
👉 Reduced concentration
👉 Higher cardiovascular risk

So what can we do?

🔹 Design quieter, more thoughtful spaces
🔹 Be mindful of volume in shared environments
🔹 Advocate for audio inclusivity
🔹 Create moments of control where possible

Because sound should connect us - not overwhelm us.

Our founder, Marion, lost most of his hearing in just a few months. What followed wasn’t just silence, it was exclusion.

Marion's experience navigating a world that wasn’t designed to help him reconnect with music, social spaces, or everyday joy was very hard. Like many people who lose their hearing later in life, he found there was little support to help bridge that gap.

Hearing loss exists on a spectrum, and every experience is different. But one thing is shared: when environments aren’t designed with accessibility in mind, people are left out.

That’s why listening to lived experience is essential, not optional.

Quiet spaces support health more than we realise.

In a world of constant noise - traffic, notifications, background music - quiet is often treated as a luxury. But it’s actually a health need.

Insights from Medical Daily show that spending time in calmer sound environments can help:

👉 Lower stress
👉 Improve focus and clarity
👉 Reduce feelings of overwhelm
👉 Support rest, recovery and hearing health

For around 1 in 3 people who are noise sensitive, these benefits aren’t just helpful - they’re necessary. Constant noise can drain energy and make everyday life harder to navigate.
