Life lately.

I haven’t (intentionally 🫣) had a drink in over 3.5 years and I still have to pinch myself at the change in myself and my life.

I used to plan things and be like ‘well I’m going to feel like s**t for that because I’m out the night before’ with zero understanding that I could just, you know, not get blackout.

That was a lesson I would only learn after a year of not drinking. Now, I don’t want to get drunk. I still crave a drink now and again, I think that’s normal. The difference is, now I just don’t see the point in it.

I enjoyed many a beverage on holiday. I enjoyed all my mornings sans hangover and I still managed to occasionally feel like s**t because I am truly awful at making the choice to drink water when the options are bountiful. And this is why I can’t drink alcohol 😇

I had NO idea how much alcohol was impacting my mental health 🧠

I really thought it was making life better. It wasn’t until I walked away that I realised how much it was fu***ng things up for me.

I would say things I didn’t mean to say.
I literally had zero filter or ability to stop myself from being super impulsive.
I honestly don’t know how I’ve never been punched in the face?
I would blackout almost every time I drank - meaning I would forget huge conversations with loved ones. I never really knew what was going on with the people in my life. If have a vague, intangible idea but I could form the full picture.
I was sick easily more than 100 times. Probably double that.
My hangovers were immense. Weekends would be written off. Things I was actually looking forward to doing would be done with blinding headaches trying not to vomit.
I felt like s**t so often that it just became my baseline way of feeling.

If this sounds like you then do yourself a favour and take a break. But don’t JUST take a break. The magic happens when you swap boozing for something you’ve always wanted to do / be consistent at. For me it was cliche CrossFit. I went from cancelling classes at 3am to showing up more than 90% of others and nailing my first pull-up in 3 months.

I don’t mean this to come across as ignorant, but giving up alcohol has been one of the easiest things I have ever done.

I don’t say that to undermine people in the struggle. Or to say that I haven’t had my own challenges.

But it has single-handedly transformed the way I think about life and myself.

It’s given me a deeper connection to myself.

Given me a shaper focus for the things and people I really love.

Given me old experiences in a new light.

Given me the ability to be consistent in the things that are important to me.

Given me real moments of joy, unfiltered

Given me ALL of my memories

And given me 1200 mornings of waking up, feeling fresh and able to take on the day.

A lot of people won’t get it…

I’m here to remind you that it doesn’t matter if they get it or not. What matters is that you do what makes you happy. For me, that’s not drinking at all anymore.

A lot of us in the alcohol free space are not here to judge, we’re here to share the message that if you suspect alcohol is holding you back - don’t stay stuck like we did. Don’t be scared to quit like we were.
