It's great that this is finally getting out to the public. Our aim should be to promote movement, rather than this idea that staying still and perfectly straight is somehow good for you.

For ages, bad posture has been assumed to cause back pain. Now some physiotherapists are rethinking what we should be doing with our spines

It can be scary experiencing pain, particularly when it's a recurring injury. But what if I told you that recurring pain doesn't always mean you're consistently doing damage to your body? Following an event like an injury, sometimes our body is so keen to make sure we don't do it again, our nervous system will be extra sensitive and cause us pain even if we're not doing damage. Whilst frustrating for us, this is actually a really healthy response. The trick, as I've mentioned in another post, is to try and build up to regular activity gradually (this is called pacing). The key message I just want to communicate here is don't panic and think you've gone back a step and have hurt yourself again. This is most likely not the case. You just need to go a little slower. A great way to know whether you're doing too much is thinking about the pain scale. Try to do things that don't make you wince. Comfortably uncomfortable is what I like to say, which is no more than 4 on the pain scale. Give it a go and if you want advice please don't hesitate to get in touch.

It can be a little daunting going in for a treatment, particularly when it's the first time you're seeing someone. However one of the best ways to get to know your practitioner and find out how much you like them and how they can help you is to ask plenty of questions. I suggest writing some questions down on a piece of paper if you feel you're likely to forget something, that way you always have your piece of paper as back up.

Do you have any questions about your pain? Feel free to ask below or book in for a free 15 minute consultation which can be done either in person or over the phone. We're always happy to help put your mind at ease.

This time last week David Hohenschurz-Schmidt won the Institute of Osteopathy's Community of Practice award. He won it for creating a webinar that taught musculoskeletal professionals like osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors how to deliver quality virtual consultations and treatments for their patients. I was honoured that he allowed me to be a part of the team along with Jerry Draper-Jodi, and I'm proud of what we achieved. In the end we had participants from all over the globe and hopefully we helped them give continued care to their patients during an unprecedented time. Thank you David and well done!!

I have a challenge for you all today. I want you to reach out to someone you care about. Someone who you miss and have been meaning to talk to for a while. A study by Seltzer et al in 2012 showed that both touch, and speaking to people we care about dramatically reduces our stress levels and whilst Covid-19 has stopped us from being able to hug the ones we love, it hasn't stopped us from being able to reach out. Even if you're feeling on top of the world today, the person you reach out to might not be and it quite possibly make their day. So reach out and give it a go. I'd love to hear if this went well and how you found it.

I encourage all my patients to get back to activity at the end of their first session, guaranteed. However the amount of activity completely depends.

After we have an injury and the area has healed, our nervous system still wants to make sure we keep it protected. In order to do this it causes pain when it thinks we're over doing it. Incredible right? You're not necessarily causing further damage. One of the best ways to get back to full activity without a pain relapse is to implement pacing. Whilst there are different levels of pacing, the simplest concept is do half of whatever you think you're capable of doing, and then gradually build up from there.

If you'd like some advice about returning back to training please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Experiencing pain can be scary, particularly if you don't know what's caused it or why it's happening. We can become fearful of doing movements that might trigger it and quite quickly our world becomes smaller as we move less and less.

Getting a diagnosis and treatment plan for your pain can give you the confidence to begin moving again as you know you won't be doing yourself any damage.

Here's. Beatrice, one of At Health's new osteopaths demonstrating a wonderful stretch for your upper back, ribs and obliques.

If your work involves sitting at a desk, it's really important that you keep as mobile as possible. Doing simple stretches like this, periodically throughout the day can help keep us from developing discomfort that comes from staying stationary.

Now more than ever it is essential that we look after our own mental health. Even if you're coping well with everything life is throwing at us at the moment, we're all under great deals of stress. Unable to see our nearest and dearest, the massive changes in how we work and even how we interact with people has changed dramatically over the last 7 months.

Doing something you enjoy daily, even if just for a short time, can bring joy and positivity to your life.

Interesting fact: Did you know that stress can have an impact on pain levels? The more stress we're under the more likely we are to perceive pain.

I know I know, don't mess with my morning coffee I hear you screaming at me. A morning coffee is sacred for so many of us, and I'm not suggesting that you don't have a morning coffee, just delay it a bit, and let me explain to you why.

Cortisol, like many of our hormones follows our circadian rhythm (our natural sleep-wake cycle that repeats roughly every 24 hours). After gradually being depleted throughout the day, once we go to sleep it begins to gradually replenish just after midnight and continues to increase until about 9am. If you have coffee before that time, it can interfere with your natural cortisol production meaning you can become depleted more quickly, or if done over a long period of time, your body may stop producing as much. To take full advantage of your love for coffee, try and leave your first coffee of the day until after 9am when your cortisol levels are at their highest. This means you'll need less boosters throughout the day and its impact will be greater. Why not give it a go?
