Relocating to the UK as a doctor?
Here are some important tips about finding temporary or permanent accommodation when you first arrive:

• Temporary housing options — Consider serviced apartments, short‑term lets, or hotels for the first few weeks while you look for something more permanent.
• Permanent rentals — Once you’ve settled in, register with letting agents or use trusted property platforms to find a longer‑term rental.
• What to check for — Ensure properties meet safety and habitability standards; check tenancy agreements, deposit protection, and tenancy rights.
• Plan ahead — Start your search early, be clear about your needs (commute, family size, budget), and prepare required documents (ID, proof of income/residency).

If you’re relocating to the UK, Doctors Relocate can support you in finding both temporary and long‑term accommodation.

Driving in the UK with an overseas licence 🚗

If you’ve recently moved to the UK, here’s what international doctors need to know:

• Licence validity: You can usually drive on a non-UK licence for up to 12 months after arrival.
• Exchanging your licence: After 12 months, you’ll need to exchange it (if eligible) or apply for a UK provisional licence and pass the driving test.
• Other requirements: Ensure your vehicle is taxed, insured, and meets UK road standards.

Doctors Relocate can support you not only with NHS job placement but also with practical settling-in guidance, including driving and relocation.

Planning your move to the UK for an NHS role?
Getting organised early can make the relocation process much smoother.

Here are a few helpful planning and packing tips for doctors preparing to relocate:

• 🗂️ Start early
Begin packing as soon as your move is confirmed. Create a checklist of what you need to bring and label your boxes clearly.
• 📄 Keep important documents safe
Make sure you travel with key documents such as passports, professional certificates, references, immigration paperwork, and medical records. Keep these in your hand luggage for easy access.
• 🧴 Pack an essentials kit
Include items you’ll need for your first few days — toiletries, medications, chargers, basic clothing, and any work-related necessities.
• 📦 Be practical about what to bring
Large or bulky items are often easier to buy once you arrive in the UK, especially if you’re moving into temporary accommodation.
• ⚠️ Check any restrictions

If you’re shipping items internationally, ensure they meet UK import rules and that your shipment is clearly labelled.

Getting your first UK credit card as an international doctor

For many international doctors relocating to the UK, securing a first UK credit card can feel challenging - especially without an existing UK credit history.

The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to improve your chances.

Basic requirements usually include:
• Being a UK resident
• Being at least 18 years old
• Having no disqualifying credit history
• In some cases, proof of employment and income

How to strengthen your application:
• Open a UK bank account and maintain consistent account activity
• Establish proof of address (e.g. tenancy agreement, utility bills)
• Set up and regularly pay essential bills to build a positive credit footprint
• Consider starting with a “credit-builder” or first-time card to begin establishing history

Building credit takes time, but starting early makes day-to-day life in the UK - from mobile contracts to renting - far smoother.

If you’d like a simple checklist to share with colleagues who are relocating, I’m happy to create one.

This article details what you can do to build your credit score and what you may wish to consider before getting your first UK credit card.
