Veganuary is so yoga!
The clean slate of a New Year often makes us want to do better. Veganuary makes that easy. It supports people to try vegan for a month…and maybe keep going. Supermarkets, restaurants and others get on board to offer extra vegan options, or to highlight the offers they already have. But what has that got to do with yoga? Well yogis in India traditionally ate a vegetarian diet. Actually, pretty much vegan as the only animal products included were usually just a little bit of dairy. The eating of animal flesh was avoided as it was considered to be a hindrance to spiritual upliftment. Vegetarian diets were also followed by the Hindu priest class and by Buddhist monks.
In the 21st century we are less likely to refer to spirituality, and more likely to talk about reducing animal suffering. Same same but different - as they say in India! And now we also know that a plant based diet contributes less to climate change, and is great for our health. So many powerful reasons to give vegan a go! I have been vegan for 19 years and it is one of the most powerful positives in my life.
