The lining of the uterine (womb) cavity is called the endometrium. The menstrual period which occurs each month is shedding of the endometrium. Endometriosis is a condition where the same cells as found in the endometrium occur elsewhere in the body. The most common sites where endometriosis is found are within the pelvis (pelvic endometriosis) or the wall of the uterus (adenomyosis).

Other symptoms may include general pelvic discomfort and especially abdominal bloatedness, lower back pain, breast sensitivity and occasionally associated with menstrual issues. Less frequent gynaecological findings might include uterine (womb) problems, different types of ovarian cysts, infection or endometriosis.

Abnormal ovarian activity as described above can mimic endometriosis which evidence shows is often 'over-diagnosed', although care has to be taken to exclude this particular disorder.

Ultrasound clinics routinely scan early pregnancy from only 6 weeks onwards. Advanced transvaginal scanning at CDS demonstrates the value of earlier scans for so-called “high risk” pregnancies (such as in cases of previous infertility, miscarriage, bleeding or suspicion of ectopic pregnancy) as well as for general reassurance.

High quality 2D images can demonstrate the baby’s heartbeat very often from just over 5 weeks. 3D images show correct positioning of the pregnancy. Crucially colour Doppler (blood flow) studies confirm hormonal (progesterone) support for the o***y which is essential for early pregnancy progress.

*Please note these images are all of the same pregnancy.
