Empowher at Equality Action

Our women's only walking group has been a successful hit for the past year. A great way to exercise and have a therapeutic session in the outdoors with friends. If you want to join us, meet in town, outside Primark every Tuesday at 9.15am for an hours walk. 😀

Our weekly Netball sessions are going great and we have reached full capacity! Wonderful to see such a brilliant turnout of women of all ages playing together, keeping fit and having fun!

Problem:
A lady came to our office asking for help after being referred to us by a friend. She was feeling very low and depressed and broke down to us saying how she couldn’t t cope with her anxiety issues despite being on medication from the doctors.

Solution:
We listened to her and told her about the different support groups that she could attend also about our befriending service.
Since then, she’s been regularly attending one of the women’s groups and made new friends. Our dedicated befriender has been supporting her on a regular basis.

Outcome:
She has shared that she is feeling so much better and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. She is more active and keeping herself busy by doing some mindfulness activities and taking on board all the advice she has been receiving. She is very thankful for the support and is keeping a journal of her journey which is helping her to overcome her depression and has a much more positive outlook in life.

On Saturday 31st August 2024 our project beneficiaries, along with their friends and children, enjoyed a wonderful day out at the beach in Rhyl North Wales, organised by Equality Action. This outing was a special reward for their active engagement with our projects, offering them an opportunity they might not have otherwise experienced or felt confident enough to pursue.

The ladies expressed their gratitude, as the day lifted their spirits, allowed them to make new friends, and provided them with a joyful day in the sunshine.

Equality Action are looking for a part time Project Officer (25 hours per week) to deliver their NHS Talking Therapies Project funded by the Vita Health Group. The post will be mainly working in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland at community-based locations, our Loughborough office and will work mostly with women’s groups based in the city and county.

We were delighted to help host an EmpowHER mentorship programme for young people yesterday with support from Toneya Sarwar, a local community member.

We had a panel of six people from various professional backgrounds talk about their own journeys. They then took questions and networked with the young audience.

“It can be a daunting task trying to get your foot in the door, but having so much support and guidance from mentors and other services is very beneficial.

“I found the panel members very inspiring.”

~ Some positive feedback from members of the audience.

We would like to thank Toneya, Minara, Ismail and Ayesha who oversaw the event and the panel members who gave their time voluntarily on a Sunday afternoon.

Part of the EmpowHer project is focusing on youth empowerment so we're delighted to share this event taking place on 30 June where professional Leicester City footballer, Hamza Choudhury will be making an appearance - yes that's right!

The aim is to encourage young people to seek advice from professionals who will be sharing their career journey as well as offering tips and advice.

Places are limited so book in advance.
