A Mother’s Practical Guide to Supporting Family Members with Addiction
Addiction doesn’t just affect one person — it affects the whole family. And often, mothers carry the deepest worry, responsibility, and heartbreak.
One of the hardest lessons is learning the difference between helping and enabling.
Helping supports recovery:• Encouraging treatment• Supporting healthy choices• Offering emotional support• Setting healthy boundaries
Enabling protects the addiction:• Giving money that funds substance use• Covering up problems• Making excuses• Rescuing them from consequences again and again
Sometimes intervention is necessary. Not to punish, but to say:“We love you, and things need to change.”
And sometimes the hardest step is learning when to let go — allowing consequences to happen because you cannot force someone into recovery.
Love them. Support recovery. But protect your own wellbeing too.🤝❤️
