Building Relationships Through Trusted Community Spaces

At the Luton Muslim Health Alliance (LuMHA), we believe that strong relationships are the foundation of effective community engagement. One of the most impactful ways to connect with the Muslim community is by collaborating within trusted community spaces such as mosques, Islamic centers, and local organisations.

By hosting health events and services in these familiar environments, we not only make healthcare more accessible but also foster trust and openness. These settings provide a comfortable atmosphere where community members feel respected and heard.

We encourage healthcare professionals and organisations to consider partnerships that utilise these trusted spaces. Together, we can enhance outreach and make a meaningful difference in community health.

Prioritising Cultural and Faith Sensitivity

Understanding and respecting the cultural and religious practices of the community is essential for effective engagement.

This means being mindful of dietary requirements, prayer times, modesty considerations, and other religious observances when designing healthcare services and programs. By doing so, we ensure our efforts are inclusive and respectful, leading to better participation and outcomes.

Healthcare providers can greatly enhance patient trust and satisfaction by integrating cultural competency into their practice and this applies to all faiths beyond just the Muslim context.

Let's work together to make healthcare services more accommodating and effective for everyone.

Engaging Community Leaders and Advocates

Community leaders, imams, and grassroots advocates play a pivotal role in connecting with the Muslim community.

They are trusted voices who can help bridge gaps between healthcare providers and community members.

At LuMHA, we actively collaborate with these leaders to amplify health messages, increase participation in programs, and ensure initiatives align with community needs.

We encourage organisations to engage with local community leaders to enhance the effectiveness of their outreach efforts. By working together, we can build stronger relationships and improve health outcomes.

Communicating Clearly and Inclusively

Effective communication is key to engaging any community. For the Muslim population in Luton, overcoming language barriers and ensuring accessibility of information are crucial.

We emphasise the importance of using plain, simple language over confusing medical jargon and providing translated materials in commonly spoken languages such as Urdu, Arabic, and Bengali etc.

Utilising community ambassadors can also facilitate better understanding and trust.

By making communication clear and inclusive, healthcare providers can build stronger relationships and encourage proactive health behaviors.

Co-Creating Initiatives with the Community

Engagement is most effective when the community is involved at every stage. Co-creating health initiatives with members of the community ensures that programs are relevant, culturally appropriate, and meet actual needs.

We invite healthcare organisations to adopt co-creation strategies for their programs. By working together, you can develop solutions that truly resonate with the community.

Reflecting on the BLMK Denny Review: Are These the Key Focus Areas?

Last month, team members from the Luton Muslim Health Alliance (LuMHA) attended the BLMK Denny Review, which explored the pressing issue of health inequalities across Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes.

The review emphasised four key areas for change:
Access: Making healthcare services more accessible for all communities.
Communication: Bridging language and cultural divides to foster trust and understanding.
Representation: Increasing diversity in healthcare leadership and decision-making.
Cultural Competency: Equipping providers to meet the unique needs of diverse populations.

While these are vital areas, we want to hear from you:
- Do you believe these are the right areas to focus on, or are there other pressing issues we should prioritise?
- What practical steps can healthcare providers, organisations, and communities take to better work towards tackling these four points?

Your input matters as we work together to create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system. Share your thoughts in the comments or connect with us directly at info@britishima.org

Did you know that in Luton, 32.9% of residents identified as Muslim in 2021, up from 24.6% in 2011? Source: Office for National Statistics

It is currently estimated that this percentage is around 36.7% in 2024 meaning just over 1 in 3 people you encounter in Luton are likely to be Muslim.

This significant demographic shift underscores the importance for local health organisations to develop faith sensitive healthcare services that effectively address the unique needs of the Muslim community.
At the Luton Muslim Health Alliance (LuMHA), we specialise in bridging healthcare gaps with faith-sensitive services and resources. We collaborate with healthcare providers to enhance access and outcomes for Luton’s diverse population.

If your organisation is seeking to engage more effectively with the Muslim community, we invite you to connect with us to explore partnership opportunities.
