Spotted this condition in a client’s ear last week! This can be caused by inserting ear buds etc or ear infections. Ouch!

Little visual lesson for y’all 😳
Lady used cotton bud in her ear….. I removed said ear bud tip today.
Do not use cotton buds in your ears! She was lucky it hadn’t damaged her ear drum.

Persistent subjective ear fullness following wax removal is commonly observed, likely related to cortical sensory adaptation after prolonged occlusion ( Scott-Brown’s Otorhinolaryngology 8th ed).”

More explanation:

When the ear canal has been blocked by wax for a prolonged period, the brain adapts to the altered sensory input — both from sound and from somatosensory receptors in the canal and TM.

The auditory cortex and somatosensory pathways have been "trained" to expect reduced stimulation.

When the obstruction is suddenly cleared (via syringing or microsuction), the auditory input normalizes quickly — but the brain may still "perceive" a sense of blockage.

This is sometimes called "phantom blockage" — analogous in concept to phantom limb sensation after amputation.

Once ear wax is removed the tympanic membrane can be fully visualised to see if any infection present. Having compacted wax can make symptoms even worse and difficult to treat any infection.

What is Ear Wax?

Ear wax, also called Cerumen, is made by the body to protect the ears. The ear wax has both lubricating and antibacterial properties.
Most of the time, the old ear wax is moved through the ear canal by motions from chewing and other jaw movements and as the skin of the ear canal grows from the inside out.
At that time, it reaches the outside of the ear and flakes off. Ear wax is produced in the outer part of the ear canal, not deep inside the ear.

Oooh I know it can feel nice but using cotton buds can push ear wax back down the ear canal and damage your ear drum!
