Ear wax removal FAQs
What is earwax removal with micro-suction?
Micro-suction is a safe and effective procedure that uses a low-powered suction device to gently remove earwax buildup. It’s a dry method, meaning no water is involved, making it suitable for people with sensitive ears or eardrums.
How do I know if I need micro-suction earwax removal?
If you experience any of the following, you might benefit from micro-suction:
Feeling of fullness or blockage in one or both ears
Muffled hearing
Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sounds in the ear)
Earache or discomfort
Dizziness or vertigo (spinning sensation)
Itchy Ears
Is micro-suction painful?
Micro-suction is generally painless. You might feel a slight tugging sensation as the wax is removed, but most people find it quite comfortable.
What are the benefits of micro-suction compared to other earwax removal methods?
Micro-suction offers several advantages:
Safe and gentle: Suitable for sensitive ears.
Precise: Allows for clear visualisation of the ear canal, ensuring thorough removal without damaging the eardrum.
Comfortable: Minimises discomfort compared to other methods like irrigation.
Quick and effective: Typically takes only 15-30 minutes.
Mess-free: Uses suction not water which can make irrigation messy.
A qualified nurse will use an otoscope to examine your ear canal and assess the wax buildup. Then, they will gently remove the wax using the micro-suction device. Throughout the process, they will explain what they are doing and answer any questions you may have. It may be recommended that you use an olive oil-based spray such as Earol for a few days prior to your appointment to help soften the wax.
