Too much hair on your hairbrush, too much in your hand or too much down the plug hole, watching your hair fall out and becoming thinner is upsetting, and hair loss is a symptom that comes up again and again during my menopause awareness sessions.
Thinning hair can make you feel self-conscious, less attractive or reduce your confidence. With an estimated 40% of women experiencing some degree of hair loss during the menopause, there must be solution.
Social media is full of them! Products and promises to restore your hair. The trouble is, how do you know which product will work for you? The market is huge and profitable so we (menopausal women) are targeted With big promises and hefty price tags.
From someone who has experienced significant hair loss, I would personally suggest the first port of call is doing some digging, your own research from reliable resources. The second port of call I would suggest is caring for your hair and scalp to reduce hair breakage and damage:
• Reduce the use of straighteners
• Wash and dry your hair less frequently (be careful drying your hair too - softly softly)
• Eat a healthy diet
• Stay hydrated
• Wear a hat to protect your hair from the wind and sun
I also try and keep my stress levels to a minimum.
Hair loss sadly is a common symptom of menopause and there can be many reasons for it. Even doing all of the above may make no difference whatsoever. You may need to seek advice or medical help from a healthcare professional.
If you find something that works for you, let me know. Hopefully, collectively, we can find solutions together.
