For all patients with a cervix, cervical screening (a smear test) is recommended and offered ever 3 years between the ages of 25 to 49 years, then every 5 years from 49 to 65 years.

May is skin cancer awareness month

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with over 156,000 non-melanoma cases diagnosed annually. Melanoma, the deadliest form, accounts for around 17,500 new cases each year and is projected to rise to 26,500 by 2040.

While skin cancer is often treatable when caught early, prevention and early detection are key.

Warning signs to detect:
A growth that increases in size and appears pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black, or multi-coloured
A mole (that looks different from your other moles)
A mole, birthmark, beauty mark, or any brown spot that:
Varies in colour
Increases in size or thickness
Changes in texture
Is irregular in outline
Is bigger than 6mm or 1/4", the size of a pencil eraser
Appears after age 21
A new red or darker colour flaky patch that may be a little raised
A new flesh-coloured firm bump
An open sore that doesn't heal
A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode, or bleed

Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 in Stockport takes place from 11th –17th May and centres on the theme “Take Action”.

Arc (Arts for Recovery in the Community) Wellbeing Walk: A social, walking, and talking event with a focus on photography is scheduled for Thursday 14 May 2026 at 10:30 am.

Walking for Wellbeing (May 12, 10:30 am): A "Walk for Wellbeing" at Woodbank Park, focused on gentle movement and connecting with nature.

Stockport Mental Health Pop-Up Stand (May 12, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm): A pop-up stand at Viaduct Park offering advice, information, and a space to chat.

Mindfulness Stroll & Yoga in the Park (May 15): A mindfulness stroll to Viaduct Park starting at 12:30 pm from Life Leisure Grand Central, followed by yoga at 12:15 pm.

Community Yoga at Upward Frog (May 15, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm): Yoga session at Upward Frog CIC studio.

Qigong in Viaduct Park (May 16, 12:15 pm - 12:45 pm): Gentle Qigong session.

Andys Man Club (May 11, 6:30 pm): Peer-to-peer mental health support for men at Life Leisure Stockport Sports Village.
