Our Occupational Therapy (OT) team are often asked about simple activities that can make a big difference for children’s social, emotional and mental health and sensory needs.
Jordanna Hirst our Head of OT says,
"One I come back to again and again? Bouncing.
Whether it’s on a trampoline, therapy ball, space hopper, or during movement-based play, bouncing provides powerful sensory input that supports children in multiple ways.
⭐Regulation & emotional wellbeing
Bouncing gives strong proprioceptive and vestibular input, which helps the nervous system feel more organised. For children who experience anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or difficulty with self-regulation, this type of movement can be deeply calming and grounding.
⭐Focus & readiness to learn
Many children need movement before they can concentrate. Bouncing helps increase alertness for those who are under-responsive, while also helping over-responsive children release excess energy in a safe, structured way.
⭐Body awareness & confidence
Repeated rhythmic movement supports body awareness, postural control and coordination. When children feel more secure in their bodies, their confidence, independence and engagement often improve too.
⭐A safe outlet for big feelings
For children who struggle to express emotions verbally, bouncing offers a physical way to release frustration, excitement or stress without judgement.
Most importantly, bouncing is accessible, fun and motivating. When therapeutic strategies feel like play, children are far more likely to engage and benefit.
