Two bespoke multi faith cabinets have been introduced at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals (WHH) to strengthen the spiritual support available across both hospital sites.

Now located in the chapel and prayer rooms at Warrington Hospital and Halton Hospital, the solid oak units are designed to reflect and respect the wide range of beliefs represented within the hospital community. Each drawer is marked with a faith symbol and contains meaningful items such as holy texts, prayer cards and information about the relevant faith tradition.

David Lowery, Workshop Manager at Benchmark, said: “The people we work with put real time and thought into every detail, knowing their efforts will provide quiet comfort to those going through challenging times."

The 'ChUSE' research trial is a pioneering talking therapy designed for children and young people who hear voices, see visions and experience or feel presences that others don’t.

30 children (age 8 to 16) in Greater Manchester have now joined the 'ChUSE' trial (short for Children with Unusual Sensory Experiences) - halfway towards the goal of 60.

The talking therapy will be trialled in community child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) provided by Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a major step forward in early intervention for children with distressing sensory experiences. The goal is to reduce distress and the likelihood of more serious mental health challenges in later life.

Dr Diana MacLeod (pictured), CAMHS clinical psychologist at Pennine Care NHS, said:

"The ChUSE trial is filling a critical gap in CAMHS. We often see young people who hear voices or have unusual experiences that don't meet the threshold for specialist services but still cause significant distress.

"The ChUSE intervention offers them targeted support – it’s such an important study that could make a lasting difference."

The trial is funded by National Institute for Health and Care Research. Check the comments for a link to more info about the study and how to get involved.

People who attend Wigan A&E in a mental health crisis are now being seen faster, more safely, and in the best environment 💙

We're proud to share that a joint initiative between Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) has been shortlisted for two Nursing Times Awards 2025!

The project was developed collaboratively by nurses in diverse roles from both NHS trusts, demonstrating the power of partnership working, innovation, and nurse-led innovation.

Abigail Webster, Quality Matron at GMMH’s urgent care services in Wigan said:

“Being nominated for the Nursing Times award is an incredible honour. This journey started with one shared vision: to make sure that when someone attends the emergency department with a mental health need, they receive the right care, at the right time and through the right pathway.

“It has been a privilege to be a part of a project to improve patient experience. We have built faster response times, a smoother pathway between GMMH and WWL, and moved to a fully digital system that gives our clinicians quicker access to the information they need to make safe and timely decisions.

“This work has been a real team effort, bringing together colleagues from across services who share a passion for improving patient experience. It has been a true collaboration and commitment to all those involved.”
