Another milestone achieved at the Earlestown Town Hall refurbishment project!

This week our team successfully installed the new high-level louvres to the existing upper and lower attic roof areas, continuing the steady progress on this historic building.

The penthouse louvres were custom-made by our very own workshop, carefully crafted as replica copies to remain in keeping with the original historic design. A great example of combining skilled craftsmanship with heritage preservation.

Great work from everyone involved as we continue bringing this iconic building back to life.

Progress update from our project at Touchstones in Rochdale…

The high-level finishes have been completed ahead of the beautiful terrazzo tiling and timber flooring being installed in the performance space and new civic dining hall.

The terrazzo floor finish links back to the original flooring where part of the library featured a concrete floor instead of parquet due to budget constraints during the original build back in the 1890’s.

Next month, we will begin cladding the servery in the dining hall and the bleacher seating housing in the performance space, this is stained to match the original timberwork of the old library, an elegant nod to the building's heritage.

Craftsmanship in Every Detail...

Bespoke Plastering at Earlestown Town Hall

Behind the scenes at Earlestown Town Hall, some truly specialist work is underway as our team delivers bespoke plastering within one of the building’s historic rooms. Heritage plastering is a highly technical craft that demands patience, precision, and a deep understanding of traditional methods to ensure new work blends seamlessly with the original character of the space.

From carefully preparing substrates to matching historic profiles and achieving the perfect finish, every detail matters. It’s a process that cannot be rushed, but the results will help preserve the architectural integrity of this important community landmark for generations to come.

Projects like this showcase the exceptional skill of our tradespeople and the pride they take in their work. We look forward to revealing the finished space as the restoration of Earlestown Town Hall continues to progress.

We were proud to sponsor and support this year’s Hopwood Hall College Apprenticeships Awards - The Construction Trades, celebrating the outstanding apprentices and employers shaping the future of our industry.

It was an inspiring evening at the Norton Grange Hotel, recognising individuals and businesses who are making a real impact through skills development and mentorship. A huge congratulations to Lily Chandler, named Apprentice of the Year 2026, Harry Hobson, winner of the Construction Trades award, along with all the finalists and award winners who continue to raise the bar across Greater Manchester.

As a business that firmly believes in investing in young talent, we were delighted not only to sponsor the event but also to present awards on the night. Apprenticeships are vital to the future of construction and engineering, and it’s fantastic to see the next generation thriving.

Works continue to move at pace at Earlestown Town Hall, with another major milestone now complete, the roof has been successfully installed on the new extension. With the structural steel frame in place and the building now watertight, the future café and servery space is really beginning to take shape as we transition into the next phase of construction.

Proud to see our apprentices Alfie Barnes (Joinery) and Oliver Phillipson (Bricklaying) thriving on the Earlestown Town Hall refurbishment.

Both have settled in brilliantly, gaining hands-on experience on a heritage project and showing real skill, commitment and pride in their work.

Supporting the next generation of trades is something we care deeply about at HH Smith and these two are a credit to the team.

Extension Works - Cafe & Servery Update

A major milestone has been reached at Earlestown Town Hall, where our team has now completed the installation of the new structural steel frame that will house the future café space.

This installation marks a significant step forward in revitalising this historic community landmark.

🔩 Steel Frame Highlights

- 5.991 tonnes of hot-rolled steel
- 61 assemblies
- Dimensions: 3.5m high, 8m wide, 11.9m long (to the existing structure)
- Plus a 7.2m canopy section running down the side

🌍 Sustainable Sourcing

The hot-rolled steel—excluding CHS sections—was supplied from a rolling mill in Olaberria and Bergara, Spain, produced using an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).
EAF steel provides significant environmental benefits:

♻️ 93.9% recycled scrap content
🌱 Considerably reduced carbon emissions
🔄 High recycling rates and improved material circularity

🤝 Collaboration

A huge thank you to BD Structures, who delivered the steel installation on time and to an excellent standard. Always a pleasure working with their team once again.

We look forward to sharing the next phase of progress as the transformation of Earlestown Town Hall continues!

Earlestown Town Hall - Latest Progress Update

Progress continues at pace on the refurbishment works, with a key milestone achieved in the lower attic this week.

Our team has successfully installed the attic steels and completed the timber floor decking, preparing the area for the upcoming MEP installation.

Because this is a heritage building, the new steelwork had to be carefully designed around the existing timber trusses, ensuring full coordination and zero clashes. To support this, a cloud-based survey of the attic was undertaken in advance, allowing the MEP design team to verify that the HMVR units could be safely and efficiently accommodated within the restricted space.

From a logistical standpoint, the installation required detailed planning. The steels had to be spliced into manageable sections so they could be carried and installed by hand within the confined attic environment—another great example of the collaborative problem-solving on this project.

👏 Well done to everyone involved in reaching this stage. More updates coming soon as we continue to restore and modernise this important community landmark.
