New Project Announcement – Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital!

We’re pleased to have commenced works at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, delivering a complex refurbishment to the Tower View Building as part of the programme to safely remove RAAC panels.

This project presents a number of technical challenges, including the careful dismantling of the existing slate roof to access the panels, which currently support key M&E services fixed to their underside. To facilitate this, our team is undertaking a full first-floor strip-out, removing ceilings, internal partitions, services, finishes and fittings ahead of the refurbishment works.

A key priority throughout the 25-week programme is maintaining a safe and fully operational environment on the ground floor, which remains in use by hospital staff. Extensive planning has been essential, with measures including a full scaffold structure, temporary roof enclosure, and dedicated access routes via external stairs and a goods hoist, ensuring safe separation between construction works and the live environment below.

This project highlights our capability in delivering technically demanding works within live, sensitive environments, with safety, coordination and programme control at the forefront.

Few photos from our recent ceremony to commemorate the milestone of completing the upper roof and cladding works to the lantern of

Milnrow Chapel at Hopwood Hall College’s Middleton Campus. The College’s Principal and Chair of Governors, together with the lead architect from Seven Architecture, joined our project team to celebrate this milestone. It is the first time the upper roof has been fully restored since the lantern of the chapel was built back in the early 1960’s so it felt right to celebrate the occasion.

A proud moment for Earlestown Town Hall

We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of St Helens Borough Council, Severiano Gomez-Aspron MBE, to Earlestown Town Hall for the unveiling of the building’s new date stone – a symbolic milestone in the ongoing refurbishment of this historic civic landmark.

The unveiling marks an important step in bringing new life to the Town Hall while celebrating the heritage and character that make it such an important part of Earlestown’s identity. The date stone will stand as a lasting reminder of the restoration works and the collective effort to preserve this much-loved building for future generations.

Thank you to everyone involved in the project and to the Mayor for joining us to mark this special occasion.

Great progress at Earlestown Town Hall!

The iconic clock tower is now back up and running, with the clock fully operational and the bells sounding once again across the town centre.

Working closely with The Cumbrian Clock Company, we have carefully restored the original clock mechanism, preserving the historic engineering while ensuring it continues to keep accurate time for years to come.

Bringing this important feature of the building back to life has been a key milestone in the refurbishment of Earlestown Town Hall, and it’s fantastic to see – and hear – the tower working again.

Mike Smith, project manager at HH Smith & Sons, said: “Restoring the clock tower has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project for our team. The level of care and craftsmanship required to carefully repair and reinstate such a historic feature has been significant, and hearing the bells ring again during testing is a proud moment for everyone involved.”

“It’s a reminder that this refurbishment is not just about construction work – it’s about preserving an important landmark and helping return Earlestown Town Hall to the heart of the community for generations to come.”

More updates on the restoration project coming soon as works continue across the building.

Another milestone achieved at the Earlestown Town Hall refurbishment project!

This week our team successfully installed the new high-level louvres to the existing upper and lower attic roof areas, continuing the steady progress on this historic building.

The penthouse louvres were custom-made by our very own workshop, carefully crafted as replica copies to remain in keeping with the original historic design. A great example of combining skilled craftsmanship with heritage preservation.

Great work from everyone involved as we continue bringing this iconic building back to life.

Progress update from our project at Touchstones in Rochdale…

The high-level finishes have been completed ahead of the beautiful terrazzo tiling and timber flooring being installed in the performance space and new civic dining hall.

The terrazzo floor finish links back to the original flooring where part of the library featured a concrete floor instead of parquet due to budget constraints during the original build back in the 1890’s.

Next month, we will begin cladding the servery in the dining hall and the bleacher seating housing in the performance space, this is stained to match the original timberwork of the old library, an elegant nod to the building's heritage.
