Forgiveness Day (Orthodox): The Biological Impact of Letting Go
Today, in the Orthodox tradition, it is Forgiveness Day - a reminder that forgiveness is not only spiritual, but deeply physiological.
Modern science confirms what ancient wisdom understood:
when forgiveness is withheld, the body remains under stress.
Unresolved anger, resentment, and self-blame activate the stress response:
Cortisol remains elevated
Inflammation increases
Immune regulation weakens
Cellular repair slows
In this state, the nervous system stays in survival mode - even when life appears “stable.”
Forgiveness sends a different signal.
When the body perceives emotional safety:
The parasympathetic nervous system activates
Stress hormones decrease
Inflammatory pathways calm
Healing and regeneration become possible
Forgiveness does not mean excusing harm.
It means releasing the body from carrying the burden.
This includes forgiving others - and often more importantly, forgiving ourselves.
Self-forgiveness reduces internal conflict, restores nervous system balance, and creates the conditions the body needs to heal.
Forgiveness is not weakness.
It is regulation.
It is resilience.
It is repair.
Today is a powerful moment to choose release - not for the past, but for your future health.
