Shame can feel like it's who you are. It's not.

This free workbook is a starting point. It helps you understand what shame is, how it shows up, and how to begin working with it gently.

Not everything has to be intense. Sometimes it's just about being honest with yourself.

You can download it here: https://benroperpsychotherapy.co.uk/self-help/

If this is something you want to explore further, I've tailored my practice into being somewhere that's healthy, calm, and shame-informed. We can look at the things that your whole body feels, but can't always name.

Most people don’t even realise it’s shame.

It doesn’t always feel dramatic. Sometimes it’s just the thought you didn’t question. The voice you’ve always trusted. The pressure you carry without knowing why.

Shame rarely shouts. But it shapes how we see ourselves, what we believe we deserve, and what we stop ourselves from reaching for.

Therapy can help you meet the parts of you that carry shame — gently, honestly, and without judgment.

I specialise in shame-informed therapy for those ready to feel more like themselves again.

Let’s talk about the thing no one wants to talk about.

Shame.

It’s the feeling that tells you you’re too much, or not enough.
That keeps you overthinking every text you’ve sent.
That makes you feel like you’ve got to be perfect, polite, productive, or else.
That hides under burnout, people-pleasing, anger, avoidance, self-criticism, or the feeling that you’ve never really belonged anywhere.

For a long time, shame shaped everything in my own life — silently. So now, it's at the heart of how I work as a therapist.

I’ve updated my therapy practice to reflect this. If you’re tired of holding it all in, or being someone you’re not just to get by, this work might be for you.

We’ll explore how shame has shaped your story — and how to rewrite it. Not through performance or perfection, but with honesty, curiosity, and care.

To couple the release of the anger workbook yesterday, I have also uploaded a wheel of emotions. This is a tool to help you to understand your emotions, but can also be used to understand the emotions of others.

Feel free to share this resource, download, save. It can be an amazing tool to go alongside your therapy as well.

Anger as an emotion is often misunderstood. Anger is seen as standoffish, hostile, and unreachable for someone trying to offer support. What if I said that anger is often a secondary emotion? What if I said that anger is the tip of an iceberg. Anger is what that person's body wants them to see, to keep them safe, protect them from vulnerability.

What if the person who displays a lot of anger is just as worthy of help and support as the person who displays depression or anxiousness?

My new workbook helps to give you information about your anger, explore external and internal factors that trigger it, and give ways to help you begin to regain control over it. If we are in control of our anger a little bit more, then we just may be a step closer to making the changes that we may want to make.

Today I had the pleasure of returning to HMP Whatton to attend their staff wellbeing day. It was great to see old staff, as well as new faces, and be given the opportunity to discuss my growth and where I have got to now.

As the day passed, I invited staff to share their stresses with me. As you see from the jar, there is a lot of stress that prison staff carry, and often they are seen as the "forgotten service". I will always hold the prison service dearly, and being able to offer my services there felt like the perfect way to thank them for my near-seven years of working there.

I will be working hard to make sure new free workbooks and resources become available on my website, and I will continue to offer concessions to key workers and those in emergency services.

A cheat sheet on how to recognise and challenge negative thoughts, and exploration into where your inner critical voice comes from. These are the first two workbooks I have published on the website, free for everyone to access.

Grounding and mindfulness coming soon, and I have begun work on one that focuses on anger.

These are tools for self-help, although they can be especially helpful alongside therapy. For more information, check out my website below.
