As a massage therapist, and former nurse, the power of touch has always fascinated me. What is it, that makes it so comforting if someone warmly holds our hand in a difficult moment or why do or don't we instantly make a connection with someone based on the quality of their handshake?
Our skin is a powerful organ of communication and just like when verbal communication is missing in our life, lack of touch and communication through our skin can leave us feeling deprived of something, disconnected from our body and not fully cared for. We all remember the Covid times, when we could not hug our nan, cuddle our grandchild, give a friend an encouraging back slap or shake the hand of someone we really wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to. This is what touch does: It connects, it speaks and it calms. And when it's missing, we miss something!
The other side of touch is that the tissues of the body communicate back. As a perceptive and well trained massage therapist we often can feel when a muscle is tired, when tissues aren't supple, when joints are locked or when stress and tension hold the tissue rigid, but we also feel when touch releases something, when we let our hands sink, rather than force into the tissues, that they thank us for that and when clients can breath and move easier again.
Mindful touch releases endorphins, eases tension and pain,, decreases the levels of stress hormones, boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure and so much more.
Having a massage is one form of touch that can really reconnect you with the body, yourself and the world. If you are uncertain about skin to skin contact, then there are many ways to work through towels, clothing, use of balls, etc. Don't let that hold you back.
I hope to welcome you for a massage. Please get in touch if you just want to discuss a query or book a session, either via messenger, phone call, text, whatsapp or email.
