Definitely one to watch.

A house history can tell you when the house was built, how the building has changed over time and even what was there before. It may previously have been a shop, an inn, a school or perhaps where the blacksmith worked. The history of your house will reveal who owned the house before and the history of the residents who called it home. It can sometimes reveal what was happening in the community at the time and how that relates to wider world events.

Who lived in your house before you?

Exciting news - BBC Two's popular house history series is returning after three years absence! And this time, there's a twist to the format... 📺

Lincoln and Lincolnshire Home for Penitent Females.

Heading to Lincolnshire Archives today to research this institution for my Post Grad. study.

The Home could accommodate up to 25 girls and young women. Established in 1847 the Home was a temporary residence for ‘unfortunate’ females providing them with moral reformation and religious instruction so that they might leave to find employment and live a more ‘respectable’ life. The Home soon outgrew the rented space on Steep Hill and built a new property on Carline Road in 1850s. By the early 1900s it was known as the Lincoln and Lincolnshire Home for Girls.

Online Census returns give a snapshot of who was in the Home at ten year intervals. The Archives collection of registers, committee minutes, annual reports etc. provide so much more.

The Jew's House, located on Steep Hill in Lincoln just below Jew's Court, is one of the oldest surviving townhouses in England, dating to around 1170. It has long been linked to the once-thriving Jewish community in medieval Lincoln.

'Just before the time of the Jews expulsion from England in 1290, the owner of the Lincoln Jew House property had been Belaset, a daughter of Solomon of Wallingford.

In 1266, during the uprising of the English barons, the Jewry of Lincoln were attacked and deeds of indebtedness, ie documents that tended to hold the baronage in the king's power, were destroyed. It is thought probable that the chest of the chirographers of Lincoln was burned at that time.

The woman owner of the Jews House (Belaset of Wallingford - whose house is the better known of the two Jews' houses at Lincoln) was hanged in 1287 for the debasement (clipping) of gold coin.

The betrothal deed of Belaset's daughter still exists.

Historians consider that a copy of the Hebrew Scriptures contained within it to be very important.'

The 1939 Register was a national survey of the population taken on 29 September 1939. The Second World War began on 1 September 1939. An identity card was issued to each person registered.

It was later used from 1948 as the basis for the National Health Service Register and updated with details such as the married name of women who married after September 1939.

With the 1931 Census returns being destroyed in 1942 and no census taken in 1941 it is a valuable resource for locating your family during this time period.

Newport Arch, Lincoln, stands as one of the enduring treasures of Roman Britain, holding the title of the oldest arch in the UK that still accommodates traffic today.

This arch represents the interior side of the northern gate of Lindum Colonia's Upper Roman City as it was in the 3rd century, albeit with additions and alterations from the medieval period to its northern side. A section of the wall that once connected to the gate still remains, visible at the adjacent Newport Cottage. GORGEOUS!!
