BRAIN FOG is one of the most debilitating things you can experience β and one of the least understood.
You go to make a cup of tea and have to think through every single step. You lose your train of thought mid-sentence. Someone asks you a simple question and your mind goes completely blank. It is exhausting, confusing, and for many people, deeply frightening.
Here is what nobody tells you. Brain fog is not random, and it is not permanent. It is your nervous system stuck in fight, flight, or freeze β running an old programme that made complete sense during a period of stress, illness, or trauma, but that has got stuck, even though the difficult time has passed.
When the brain perceives danger, it shifts resources away from the logical, thinking part of your mind and into survival mode. And here is the crucial bit β it does not always know when the danger is over. So the fog lingers, not because anything is currently wrong, but because the subconscious has not yet been shown that it is safe to stand down.
I have written a full blog explaining exactly what is happening in your brain when you experience fog, why it persists after illness, stress, bereavement or burnout, and what can genuinely help.
If you or someone you know has been struggling with brain fog and not getting any real answers, I hope this gives you the explanation you have been looking for.
