ADHD Awareness Month — a personal reflection

As October wraps up, I’m reflecting on a nearly year-long journey since my ADHD diagnosis last November. I’ve been learning where executive dysfunction hits hardest and celebrating the parts I want to lean into (hello pattern recognition, creativity and staying calm in a crisis).

I’m still waiting to try medication. I know it isn’t a silver bullet skills create change and while I wait, these small supports have helped with focus, planning and time:

My core mantras:
• Procrastination: “If I am having trouble getting started, the 1st step is too big.”
• Planning: “If it’s not in the calendar, it doesn’t exist.”
• Distraction control: “Out of sight, out of mind; in sight, in mind.”
• Prioritisation: “First things first.”
• Organisation: “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

Why I procrastinate: task aversion, time blindness/poor planning, and anxiety/self-doubt/perfectionism.
If you’re late-diagnosed (or suspect you might be), you’re not alone. If this resonates, save + share. And if you’d like support reach out when you’re ready. 🦋🌈

I don’t wear yellow (too pale, too 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ), but I’m all in for .
Let’s show young people they’re not alone.

To every young person who’s anxious, lonely, struggling to cope, or scared to reach out: you’re not alone.

Talking counts. One message, one honest conversation, it all helps. If you’re not sure what to say, try: “I’m finding things hard. Can we talk?”

I’m here, and so are people who care. 💛

Need support now (free, 24/7): Text YM to 85258 (YoungMinds), or SHOUT to 85258.

When the 🌏 feels unsafe, your nervous system is doing its job.
Big, frightening events (war, disasters, constant breaking news) can leave us wired, flat, or foggy. That isn’t you “failing” it’s your 🧠 trying to protect you.

This year's World Mental Health Day Theme is about mental health in emergencies and crises. We can’t fix everything, but we can care for ourselves and each other in small, real ways.

Things that help when life feels unpredictable:

1) Control — keep your 🌏 workable
• Set 📰 boundaries: choose when you’ll check, turn off live alerts. 🚫
• Reduce inputs: tidy one small area, clear five emails, choose tomorrow’s clothes now.
• Use ⚓: same wake time, a simple meal, a short walk or stretch.
• Protect energy: one priority per day is still progress. 🔋

2) Influence — small acts, real impact
• Check on one person. Ask: “One thing I can take off your plate?”
• Offer practical help (school run, a lift, share a resource).
• Share verified information; skip the hot takes and fake news.
• Give what you can — time, money or skills. Small counts.

3) Care — hold compassion without burning out
• Notice overload cues (irritable, numb, scattered) and step away from the feed.
• Swap isolation for co-working or a ☕ with someone.
• If you parent or care for young people: be available, keep routines light, invite questions without pushing for them.

If you’re someone who already struggles with mental health difficulties, global uncertainty can hit harder. Psychological support can help.

I offer warm, practical therapy online and in Marple, Stockport. When you’re ready, reach out. 🦋 🌈

UK support (24/7): Samaritans 116 123 • NHS 111 (urgent advice) • Text SHOUT to 85258 • Mind resources at mind.org.uk

ADHD isn’t just about being distracted.

It can look like emotional overwhelm, perfectionism, or constant overthinking.

Many girls grow up masking their struggles and don’t get diagnosed until adulthood. I know, because I was one of them. 🙋‍♀️

ADHD is real. ADHD is valid. There is support and you're not alone.

September is my new year. Maybe it’s the academic calendar I never grew out of, or the new autumn/winter fashion signalling change but this month always invites me to pause. After a week away, I’m taking stock: what’s served me, what hasn’t, and what small steps will help me move forward.

I take my lead from nature leaves letting go so new growth can come. If you (or your child/teen) are finding transitions hard new school year, routines, or overwhelm you’re not alone. My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical, with strategies you can actually use.

Try this gentle reset:

Let go: One habit/thought that isn’t helping.

Keep: One strength or support you’ll carry forward.

Do: One tiny action this week (5–10 minutes max).

If you’d like support, I offer CBT for children, teens and families (in-person in Marple, Stockport, and online). Reach out when you’re ready no pressure, just a conversation. 🦋🌈

☕ Ever notice how caffeine affects you differently?

For most people it’s a pick-me-up… but for many with ADHD, it can actually slow the brain down or even make you sleepy. 🙋

Lots of people turn to caffeine while waiting for ADHD medication but it’s not a substitute. It doesn’t treat the underlying ADHD, it just gives a temporary shift.

Waiting for support can feel really tough. While we can’t always control the system, we can find strategies and spaces that help in the meantime...therapy, routines, and community support can make a real difference. 💙

👉 You’re not alone if you’re in this “waiting stage.” Have you found caffeine helps or hinders you?

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day

Suicidal thoughts can feel unbearably heavy and isolating. You are not your thoughts and you are not a burden. You are not alone. 💛

It’s okay to talk about su***de, openly and sensitively. Talking doesn’t put the idea into someone’s head. It creates space for connection, support, and hope. 🌍💬

Reaching out whether it’s to a friend, family member, or a professional is not weakness. It’s courage. And asking “Are you ok?” and really listening can make a difference.

If you’re struggling, please know there is help and hope. You don’t have to carry this on your own:
📞 Samaritans call free on 116 123
📞 Papyrus 0800 068 4141
📞 NHS 111
for advice and resources

Let’s keep talking, keep listening, keep caring. 💛

What’s a psychological formulation (aka a therapy ‘map’)?
In CBT, we don’t just stick a label on your struggles we work together to map out why you’re feeling the way you do.

🗺️ Think of it like drawing a picture of your difficulties:

What triggers them

What thoughts, feelings and behaviours keep them going

What strengths and resources can help you move forward

✨ It’s different from a diagnosis. A formulation is an explanation, not a label.

This map helps us understand your unique story and gives us a shared plan for change.

What actually is CBT?
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) isn’t just talking it’s about learning skills you can use for life.

Here’s how it works:
🔍 Together we explore how thoughts, feelings and behaviours are linked.
🗺️ We create a “map” of what’s keeping difficulties going.
🎯 We set clear goals that matter to you.
📝 You practise skills in and between sessions.

The aim? To help you become your own therapist with tools you can use long after therapy ends.

✨ Therapy that’s collaborative, practical, and focused on making real change.

“If you’d like to know more about CBT and how it could help you or your child, get in touch I’d love to chat.”

🌈🦋 Let me tell you about my logo…

I thought the easiest part of setting up my practice would be designing a logo that represented me and what I wanted my therapy work to stand for.

Spoiler alert: it was the hardest part. 😅
Huge ❤️ to my very patient friends (and especially my husband!) who gave honest feedback on the many versions that definitely didn’t make the cut.

What we landed on felt just right. 👌🏻

That rainbow butterfly isn’t random – it’s the ADHD symbol, a nod to neurodiversity, colour, energy, and growth. As someone with lived experience of ADHD, it was important to weave that into the identity of my work.

🦋 Butterflies are about transformation. They don’t stay stuck. They evolve, grow, and change and that’s what therapy is for too.
To work through the parts of life that feel heavy, painful or limiting, and move gently towards something freer and more aligned.

I also didn’t want a traditional therapy logo because I’m not doing therapy in the traditional way. This practice is something a little different. Neuro-affirming. Creative. Grounded.Real.

And always led with warmth and curiosity.

Let me know what you think of the 🌈 🦋

And if you’re curious about how therapy could help, I’m always happy to chat.💬
