Waxcaps and Deceivers

The waxcaps have exploded in the fields near me.

So much colour ❤️

The amethyst deceivers found this morning were a stunning shade of purple too.

I actually thought that someone had dropped a whole punnet of cherry tomatoes in the field when I first spotted the scarlet ones ( the last photo) 😂

Parasol Perfection

A reposted photograph from a couple of years ago, but the parasols have popped here in mid Wales

Parasol mushrooms, one of the more choice edibles when it comes to mushroom foraging, and just fun to find because they are so BIG!

A few tips for identifying them:

It’s size is one factor that can help distinguish it from other mushrooms (although of course extra care needs to be taken with smaller specimens).

Although not an amanita with a volval sac parasols do have a bulbous base that can look similar in younger mushrooms.

It has a moveable ring.

The gills are crowded and free from the stipe.

The snakeskin pattern on the stipe is a key feature in distinguishing it from the shaggy parasol (Chlorophyllum rhacodes) which although edible for some can cause gastric upset in others.

The trio in this shot really did make lovely models for a photo.

Allotment Haul

Mostly from my patch with a few bits from the community garden.

Progress on the plot has been non existent these last 6 weeks or so. Utterly neglected but the plants have still produced.

I was perhaps most excited at the new growth nettles 😂

Hedgerow Harvest Cake

Foraging to make cakes is one of my favourite things. Getting to write about it for a magazine is a rather lovely bonus.

This Hedgerow Harvest Cake is my latest contribution to Botanical Anthology Magazine and can be found in the current issue.

It's a fruit laden cake based on a traditional Welsh harvest cake – Teisen y Cynhaeaf. Here in Wales the classic version was baked with a layer of apples, sultanas & cinnamon & sometimes almonds in the centre of the cake.

My version adds some popular autumn hedgerow ingredients into the mix - blackberries and hazelnuts.

A seasonal treat perfect for celebrating the upcoming autumn equinox or taking on an autumn picnic.

(Links to the magazine can be found up in my bio. For the next 10 days or so it’s available at 20% off the standard price and comes with a free All About Rosemary booklet. If autumn is your season it’s definitely worth checking out for lots more inspiration.)
