What is EMDR therapy?
You may have heard of EMDR… but not be quite sure what it actually is.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a type of psychotherapy that helps your brain process and heal from difficult or overwhelming experiences.
Sometimes, when something distressing happens, the memory can get “stuck” — along with the emotions, beliefs, and body sensations that came with it.
That’s why you might: • Feel triggered without fully understanding why
• React strongly to certain situations
• Or feel like something from the past is still affecting you now
EMDR helps your brain reprocess these memories so they feel less intense, less overwhelming, and more like something that happened in the past, rather than something you’re still reliving.
It uses gentle, guided techniques (like eye movements or tapping) to support this natural healing process.
You don’t have to go into every detail of what happened, and you stay in control throughout.
EMDR can be helpful for:
• Trauma and PTSD
• Anxiety
• Phobias
• Low self-esteem
• And other experiences that feel “stuck”
